NBA Notebook: Bryant has torn wrist ligament

Kobe Bryant did not play in the Los Angeles Lakers' preseason finale Wednesday night against the Clippers because of a torn ligament in his right wrist, and his status for the season opener on Christmas Day against the Chicago Bulls is up in the air.

A MRI revealed the extent of the injury, which occurred early in the in the third quarter of the Lakers' 114-95 loss Monday night to the Clippers. Bryant was examined by Dr. Steven Shin of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. Depending on the degree of the tear, he could be sidelined as long as three to four weeks.

"He's day-to-day. As soon as I figure it out, I will let you guys know," said coach Mike Brown, who took over this season after the retirement of Phil Jackson.

Bryant, who shoots right-handed, was sent crashing to the floor by Clippers center DeAndre Jordan on a blocked layup and came up holding the wrist. He stayed in the game for another three minutes, then went to the bench for a good stretch and was allowed to return to the floor during the fourth quarter.

Bulls

Chicago made it official: Reigning MVP Derrick Rose agreed to a five-year contract extension. The extension, which kicks in next season, is worth approximately $94 million. The extension was hardly a surprise given all that Rose has accomplished so far. Rose, a Chicago native, went from rookie of the year to All-Star to MVP in his first three seasons, becoming the youngest player to win that award.

Hornets

Mexico native Gustavo Ayon, a player in Spain's top professional league, reportedly had told media in Spain that he will be joining New Orleans. A Hornets spokesperson said a news conference is scheduled for Friday to announce the addition of a new player, but he could not name the player, per team policy, because a contract has not been signed.

Warriors

Golden State president Rick Welts is promising to "vigorously defend" the team's reputation after a sexual harassment suit was filed against the franchise and guard Monta Ellis. Welts read a prepared statement that said when team officials were made aware of what he described as a "consensual relationship" between Ellis and Erika Smith, who is suing the team, the team told both to "stop." Smith said she was unfairly dismissed as the team's community relations director in August.

Trail Blazers

Center Marcus Camby was ruled out for Portland's preseason finale Wednesday against Utah after tweaking his left knee in warm-ups.
