From the time they can walk until they drive everywhere they go, children are ?at risk? in?becoming victims in pedestrian/car accidents. SafetyBright, a firm who specializes in safety?clothing, is not only aware of this but works diligently to reduce the numbers in this regard.?Making children ?visible? is a major step in protecting them, and?SafetyBright? offers high?visibility clothing, such as?high visibility jackets?and?high visibility vests. These?safety vests?go?a long way to ensuring that your children will be seen, especially at night. Another ?tool? they?offer for nighttime safety is a wide variety of?LED flashlights! As the article below, prepared on?behalf of the Law Offices of John G. McNally, shows, parental involvement is a key to their?children?s safety!

Children and teens face a higher risk of being in a pedestrian-car collision in the U.S.?and the dangers are very severe for younger children and teens. A new study has contributed the?increased risk to three specific behaviors by children and teens involved in pedestrian accidents.

For children under the age of 6, running into the middle of the street is the most common?cause of children being injured during car accidents, according to study done by New York?University?s Langone School of Medicine.

Older children and teens are more likely to be hit by a car when they cross the street in?the middle of the block rather than at the corner where crosswalks are more likely to be. Teens?also face a higher risk of being hit by a vehicle when they use electronic devices and cannot hear?vehicles around them.

For children under the age of 6, the study found that 17 of the 39 children studied were?injured after running into the middle of the street. Fourteen of the 39 children were injured after?crossing the middle of the street instead of at the corner.

In the study, 47 percent of children ages 7 to 12 were injured after crossing the street in?the middle of the block and 25 percent were injured after running into the middle of the street.

When the study analyzed teens ages 13 to 17, the results were different and many?accidents were caused by distracted teens using electronic devices. Thirty-two percent of these?accidents occurred while teens were crossing the street in the middle of the block, 18 percent?involved teens using electronic devices and 14 percent occurred after a teen ran into the middle?of the street.

The researchers suggested that increased parental supervision, especially for younger?children, would help reduce these accidents. They also noted the importance of teaching children?and teens about crossing the street safety and reducing distractions, specifically reducing the use?of electronic devices by pedestrians.
