Ogden?s Lund among fighters at military appreciation card

After four years of wrestling at Bear River High School and experience playing collegiate football with Fort Lewis College in Colorado, Ogden?s Ryan Lund, 21, wasn?t sure what to expect when began a new career in mixed martial arts in March.

So far, things have been going well, though.

he 170-pounder, who trains out of Foley?s gym and The Shop, both in Ogden, has won his first two amateur fights. He goes for his third win, against Christine Ritter, Saturday night at the Davis Conference Center as part of the One Strike One Kill card, part of a Military Appreciation Fundraising night at the DCC.

The gates open at 6 and the fight card, which matches local 155-pound pros Thiago Alves and Francisco Espinoza in the main event, starts at 7.

?Once I was done playing college football, it made sense to get into MMA,? said Lund, who cites the variety of MMA as one appeal. ?You can?t be set in one way. ... like wrestling. You have to build on what you know,? he added.

Lund, who trains about four days a week in the gym, has seen success. His first fight lasted 98 seconds; the second only 47 seconds. Both of his opponents were finished with rear naked chokes.

Trained by MMA pro Dave Foley, Lund?s goal is not unusual for a young fighter. He wants to make it into the UFC and become a champion. He?s aware, though, that his journey has just started.

?On a scale of 1 to 10, I?d say I?m about a 3 right now.?

Besides the main event and the Lund-Ritter match, there are several other fights. They include the co-main event, matching heavyweights Rhett Morehouse and Jeff Munson.

Other bouts include AJ Garcia versus Kevin Tarma, 155 pounds, Brandon Reese versus Tuckett Crittendon, 135 pounds, Matt Jackson versus Jeff Nielson, 170 pounds, and Baron Hollowell versus Tyler Roche, 155 pounds.

The proceeeds from the military appreciation card will be given to the Cobra Council, a private non-profit group that benefits military personnel, civilians and families at Hill Air Force Base.

The card organizer is L.T. Weese, a 388th Component Maintenance Squadron honorary commander. Layton political figures, including Mayor Steve Curtis and Utah Rep. Curt Oda, have both publicly endorsed the card as one way to show support for Hill and its personnel.

?The MMA night is another fine example of exceptional community support to Team Hill?s Airmen and their families,? Col, Scott Long, 388th Fighter Wing commander, said in a prepared statement.

The DCC is located at 1651 North, 700 West. Tickets are available at Smith Tix, Lokal?s Restaurant or Northern Realty at the Layton Hills Mall.
