Review: The HTC One Mini

HTC One Mini

Can HTC squeeze the essence of its best phone yet into a smaller, more affordable package?

We’ve made no secret of the fact that the HTC One is our favorite phone of the year so far. Back in March HTC knocked it out of the park with exceptional build quality, a stunning display and fast, well-designed software. And though not entirely perfect — we took issue with image quality from the camera, for instance — it’s been hard to find another device that’s as consistently fast, beautiful and enjoyable to use.

In previous years, HTC’s sold different devices with substantially different designs and features for the mid-range and high-end. However 2013 sees the Taiwanese manufacturer adopting a more consistent approach. As such, this year’s leading mid-range phone is the HTC One Mini, a device which aims to distil the essence of the HTC One into a smaller form factor with a lower price tag.

But as we’ve seen from previous mid-level offerings, it’s easy to make one compromise too many, resulting in a lackluster device. So has HTC succeeded where others have faltered? Find out after the break, in our definitive HTC One Mini review.

Royal baby name has 'Seinfeld' connections

Pop culture

IMAGE: Seinfeld

AP file

The royal baby's new name doesn't have a "Seinfeld" connection of course. Or does it?

So there's this royal baby, yada yada yada, and the whole world is celebrating like it's Festivus or something. We don't want to be the biggest jerk at the jerk store, but sometimes people get sick of being told, "Ya gotta see the BABY!" And they didn't even name it Seven, the name Susan's cousin stole from George. Guess those Brits just don't appreciate Mickey Mantle's jersey number.

But wait a minute. Are we seeing a certain "Seinfeldian" trend in the names Prince William and Duchess Kate just announced for the future king?

Take the name George Alexander Louis apart. First there's "George," which yes, we know, Queen Elizabeth's beloved father, but also, a certain Costanza we all know and love.

Then there's "Alexander," which just so happens to be the last name of the actor who played George, Jason Alexander.

And then there's "Louis," after Louis Mountbatten, but also a name that appears in the "Seinfeld" credits. If you don't know that Julia Louis-Dreyfus played Elaine Benes, all we have to say to you is GET OUT! (Add characteristic Elaine double-hand push in there if you like.) And, as the official "Seinfeld" Twitter account pointed out, "Louis" is also George Costanza's middle name.

Three names, three (or four) "Seinfeld" connections. Now that name's sounding a little better to us Yanks. We might even have to send the little royal guy a chocolate babka or a beltless trenchcoat. And now Will and Kate have a few years to start working out a cover story on why an eventual little brother will be dubbed Cosmo Kramer.

NVIDIA Demonstrates Logan SoC: < 1W Kepler, Shipping in 1H 2014, More Energy Efficient than A6X?

Ever since its arrival in the ultra mobile space, NVIDIA hasn't really flexed its GPU muscle. The Tegra GPUs we've seen thus far have been ok at best, and in serious need of improvement at worst. NVIDIA often blamed an immature OEM ecosystem unwilling to pay for the sort of large die SoCs necessary in order to bring a high-performance GPU to market. Thankfully, that's all changing. Earlier this year NVIDIA?laid out its mobile SoC roadmap through 2015, including the 2014 release of Project Logan - the first NVIDIA ultra mobile SoC to feature a Kepler GPU. Yesterday in a private event at Siggraph, NVIDIA demonstrated functional Logan silicon for the very first time.

NVIDIA got Logan silicon back from the fabs around 3 weeks ago, making it almost certain that we're dealing with some form of 28nm silicon here and not early 20nm samples.

NVIDIA isn't talking about CPU cores, but it's safe to assume that Logan will be another 4+1 arrangement of cores - likely still based on ARM's Cortex A15 IP (but perhaps a newer revision of the core). On the GPU front, NVIDIA confirmed our earlier speculation that Logan includes a single Kepler SMX:

One Kepler SMX features 192 CUDA cores. NVIDIA isn't talking about shipping GPU frequencies either, but it did provide this chart to put Logan's GPU capabilities into perspective:

Don't get too excited as we're looking at a comparison of GFLOPS and not game performance, but the peak theoretical ALU bound performance of mobile Kepler should exceed that of a Playstation 3 or GeForce 8800 GTX (memory bandwidth is another story however). If we look closely at NVIDIA's chart and compare mobile Kepler to the iPad 4, we get a better idea of what sort of clock speeds NVIDIA would need to attain this level of performance. Doing some quick Photoshop estimation it looks like NVIDIA is claiming mobile Kepler has somewhere around 5.2x the FP power of the PowerVR SGX 554MP4 in the iPad 4 (76.8 GFLOPS). That works out to be right around 400 GFLOPS. With a 192 core implementation of Kepler, you get 2 FLOPS per core or 384 FLOPS per cycle. To hit 400 GFLOPS you'd need to clock the mobile Kepler GPU at roughly 1GHz. That's certainly doable from an architectural standpoint (although we've never seen it done on any low power 28nm process), but it's probably?a bit too high?for something like a smartphone.

NVIDIA didn't want to talk frequencies but they did tell me that we might see something this fast in some sort of a tablet. I suspect that most implementations will be clocked significantly lower. Even at half the frequency though, we're still talking about roughly Playstation 3 levels of FP power out of a mobile SoC. We know nothing of Logan's memory subsystem, which obviously plays a major role in real world gaming performance but there's no getting around the fact that Logan's Kepler implementation means serious business. For years we've lamented NVIDIA's mobile GPUs, Logan looks like it's finally going to change that.

Unlike previous Tegra GPUs, Kepler is a fully unified architecture and OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenGL 4.4 and DirectX 11 compliant. The API compliance alone is a huge step forward for NVIDIA. It's also a big one for game developers looking to move more seriously into mobile.?Epic's Tim Sweeney even did a blog post for NVIDIA?talking about Logan's implementation of Kepler and how it brings feature parity between PCs, next-gen consoles and mobile platforms. NVIDIA responded in kind by running some Unreal Engine 4 demos on Android on a Logan test platform. That's really the big story behind all of this. With Logan, NVIDIA will bring its mobile GPUs up to feature parity with what it's shipping in the PC market. Game developers looking to port games between console, PC, tablet and smartphone should have an easier job of doing that if all platforms supported the same APIs. Logan will take NVIDIA from being very behind in API support (with no OpenGL ES 3.0 support) to the head of the class.

NVIDIA took its Ira demo, originally run on a Titan at GTC 2013, and got it up and running on a Logan development board. Ira did need some work to make the transition to mobile. The skin shaders were simplified, smaller textures are used and the rendering resolution is dropped to 1080p. NVIDIA claims this demo was done in a 2 - 3W power envelope.

The next demo is called Island and was originally shown on a Fermi desktop part. Running on Logan/mobile Kepler, this demo shows OpenGL 4.3 and hardware tessellation working.

The development board does feature a large heatspreader, but that's not too unusual for early silicon just out of bring up. Logan's package size should be comparable to Tegra 4, although the die size will clearly be larger. The dev board is running Android and is connected to a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 touchscreen.

US artist, Syrian children beautify refugee camp

ZAATARI, Jordan (AP) ? Young Syrian children, refugees of their country's grinding civil war, playfully grab paint brushes and rollers nearly as big as they are in this windswept desert camp, adding splashes of bright color to their bleak surroundings.

Most of the trailers and tents match the beige color of the swirling sand surrounding the Zaatari refugee camp, home to about 120,000 Syrians who fled the nearly three-year war still gripping the nation. Slowly though, that's changing with the help of a U.S. artist who is leading children haunted by the conflict to paint buildings and walls at the crowded camp with murals expressing their lives and hopes.

"So many children are bored in Zaatari. They just throw rocks because they have nothing else to do," artist Samantha Robison said. "There's a lot of violent tendencies and negative energy, so if you bring in art and give them a positive activity, it helps a lot."

The painting project gives a moment of color and self-expression for kids who have had their lives shattered by Syria's war. Last week, the special U.N. envoy for children and conflict warned about the effects of the upheaval on children, warning that Syria's violence is producing a generation plagued with illiteracy and "filled with hate."

Just over half the refugees in Zaatari are under the age of 18. On what was once an empty patch of desert, the sprawling complex has grown in just a year into the second largest refugee camp in the world and is Jordan's fifth largest populated city, with more refugees pouring daily across the border, just 16 kilometers (10 miles) away. Many of the families come from the southern Syrian province of Daraa, where the Syrian uprising began, and many of the children have directly experienced the trauma of having their neighborhoods bombarded and having relatives killed.

Robison, 27, from the Washington, D.C.-area, works in the camp as part of an organization she founded called AptART. She has traveled to Cambodia, Congo, Iraq and Syria to work on art projects before arriving at Zaatari.

Under Robison's watch, children have already painted a number of structures. A one-time white trailer serving as a pediatric clinic now sports a bright blue facade, with cartoon images of doctors, children and parents appearing in bold orange, turquoise and red tones. Big Arabic calligraphy appears throughout, offering the adage: "Prevention is better than cure."

In another part of the camp, a giant purple tree spreads its branches over the length of a wall at one of Zaatari's schools. Among the branches, refugee children painted a plane, an easel, and other symbols ? objects representing jobs they hope to have when they grow up.

As South African artist Luc Van Der Walt, one of those working with Robison, poured out the paint into large canisters to mix, the children ? from as young as 5 years old to their early teens ? crowded around, anxious to dip their brushes. Tiny girls squealed as they dashed to the nearby wall to dab it with flashes of bright yellow. "Slow down, slow down," Syrian volunteers repeatedly told the excited children, trying to get them to take turns at the paint bucket.

A 12-year-old girl who gave her name as Habeer sang while she and the kids painted a mural. "I am happy when I am painting," she said. "I try to draw a lot at school. The best things I like to draw are trees, birds and flowers. I want to be a teacher when I grow up."

Robison, who works with South African artist Luc Van Der Walt, said the artwork helps children take a sense of ownership in the crowded refugee camp, where some have dismantled structures for their own use. Particularly hard hit are communal bathrooms, as refugees take apart the bricks and piping to construct their own private showers and toilets, aid workers say.

"We allow children to write on a wall. We turn writing on a wall into a positive thing," Robison said. "What child hasn't written their name or something and was scolded? We're having a little bit of fun with it and getting the kids involved."

Robison stops children from painting the black, white and green tricolor flag of Syria's opposition, trying to keep politics out of the work. She and Van Der Walt also stop children from copying cartoon characters from television, though they encourage any other artistic endeavor.

Around 600 children in the camp have participated in the program so far, as the artist team moves from section to section of the camp, Robison said. The kids lay down a base coat and then add their pictures, then Robison and her colleagues incorporate it into a larger mural. Often the murals have a public service message, like to beware of germs or to avoid wasting water.

Children laugh and sing as they paint. Some plant paint handprints on the walls.

Rawan, a 10-year-old, was helping give a bathroom wall a bright coat of yellow paint.

"I've painted many buildings in Zaatari," she said. "I like painting and putting designs on everything, including trailers and now this washroom."

Robin Nataf, part of another aid group called ACTED, said the art helped bring refugees together.

"As soon as AptART take out the paint, children, elders, even imams and schoolteachers turn out. Everybody is happy to see some fun happening and the children getting involved," Nataf said.

"These people have to live here and we don't know for how long. It's important they make it as nice as possible."

2016 GOP presidential hopefuls already trading blows

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is pictured above.

Ask any potential 2016 candidate about their presidential aspirations, and you'll hear the usual non-answers: The next election is a long way off, I'm concentrating on my day job, and, by golly, presidential politics is the last thing on my mind.

The cagey answers are obligatory - anything more forthright would smack of unseemly ambition - but they're also usually rubbish.

Take Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, interviewed Sunday on ABC's "This Week." Cruz, who is believed to be eyeing a presidential run in 2016, was fundraising in Iowa this weekend - a conspicuous and necessary stop for any presidential hopeful. ABC's Jon Karl tried repeatedly to coax something resembling candor out of Cruz, but the freshman Republican declined to take the bait.

Asked if he's running in 2016, Cruz responded: "We are having a national debate about which direction the country should go...And what I am doing now is trying to participate in that national debate. "

"I understand that everyone likes to focus on the politics," he added, but "I'm not focused on the politics."

Karl seemed to smell something funny. "Is it fair to say you're not?" he asked.

Cruz replied: "I've been in the Senate all of seven months. The last office I was elected to was student council. So this has been a bit of a whirlwind."

But despite his lack of expressed interest in the job, it's clear that Cruz would like to keep the door open. Some have raised questions about whether Cruz, born in Canada to a mother from Delaware, is even eligible to be president, given his foreign birth. In the interview with ABC, Cruz dismissed the doubters.

"My mother was born in Wilmington, Delaware," he explained. "She is a U.S. citizen. So I am a U.S. citizen by birth."

And the case is closed, as far as Cruz is concerned. "I'm not going to engage in a legal debate. The facts are clear," he said. "I can tell you where I was born and who my parents were. And then as a legal matter, others can worry about that. I'm not going to engage."

Cruz even managed to sneak in an underhanded dig at another potential GOP hopeful, staking out a platform as an unapologetic conservative that could serve him well in a presidential primary fight come 2016.

He again voiced his opposition to the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform bill, and knocked one of its Republican co-authors, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who is also believed to be eyeballing a presidential run in 2016.

"I think [Rubio] believes in the [Senate] bill," Cruz said. But he added, "If the [Senate] bill became law, in another 10, 20 years, we wouldn't have 11 million people here illegally, we'd have 20 or 30 million."

And as Republicans consider 2016, Cruz said, they should seek a candidate who prizes purity over accommodation.

"You know if you look at the last 40 years, a consistent pattern emerges," he explained. "Republicans nominate a candidate for president who runs as a strong conservative, we win. And we nominate a moderate who doesn't run as a conservative, we lose."

Three reported dead in central Chinese earthquake

China Daily via Reuters

A man gives water to an injured woman after an earthquake hit Minxian county in China's Gansu province on Monday.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck central China on Monday, reportedly killing at least 54 people and collapsing many homes.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit in Gansu province about 8 miles east of Chabu at 7:45 a.m. Beijing time (7:45 p.m. ET Sunday). The USGS recorded it at 6 miles deep and said it caused shaking in a rural region where the infrastructure isn't seismically resistant.

State news agency Xinhua said the death toll had risen to 54, citing municipal officials. It put the number of people seriously injured at 296. Earlier official statements put the death toll at 22.?

Photos posted on Chinese social media showed roads on the sides of riverbanks that had subsided and farmhouses reduced to piles of red bricks, Reuters reported.

The official China Meteorological Administration warned that heavy rain was possible in southeastern Gansu province Monday night and into Tuesday. It said the rain could hamper rescue efforts and urged residents to be alert to flash flooding in areas damaged by the earthquake.

Bing Maps

About 5,600 residential buildings were damaged, the Beijing-based China Daily newspaper reported Monday afternoon. Some train service was suspended, and hundreds of armed police were mobilized to repair a damaged part of the main highway linking Lanzhou, the provincial capital, to Minxian county, it reported.

Xinhua said the quake was felt in the neighboring cities of Dingxi, Longnan and Tianshui, as well as Lanzhou, more than 100 miles away. About 19,000 people live in the area that was subject to the strongest shaking, it said.

The quake was followed an hour and a half later by a 5.6-magnitude quake at about the same depth,?the USGS reported.

Based on the history of earthquakes of this size in rural China, there could be "significant casualties," the USGS said.

Gansu abuts Sichuan province, where a 6.6 quake in April killed 164 people and injured more than 6,700, China's worst quake in three years.

NBC News' Li Le, Sarah Burke and Alastair Jamieson contributed to this report.

Shared Content Store in Microsoft App-V 5.0 ? Behind the Scenes

~ Thamim Karim | Premier Field Engineer

imageFollowing on from my introduction to Shared Content Store (SCS) in this post I want to take you behind the scenes of what actually happens when we put our App-V 5.0 Client into this mode. The easiest way to understand how things work is by first looking at how things happen when launching an application for the first time in normal mode.

Normal Mode (Default)

clip_image002

As you can see the first time the application is launched the App-V Streaming Filter interjects in order to provision the requested page to the client and in turn also commits that to the local disk within the cache. This means subsequent launches will not trigger any streaming of content as it will be held locally within cache. Now let?s take a look at how things how work when in Shared Content Store mode.

Shared Content Store

clip_image004

As you can see the only difference with Shared Content Store mode is that the assets are never committed onto the local disk. This means all subsequent launches will trigger the App-V Streaming Filter to intercept the page reads and stream the assets to the client. Therefore the assets of the application only ever reside in memory, the only part of the application that will be on disk is Feature Block 0, read more on that here.

Impact

When talking about SCS often questions are raised about impact and what additional overheads there are. The first thing to mention is that SCS is primarily designed for datacenter based solutions such as VDI/RDS environments, where fast connected storage is standard. Secondly as you have seen from the comparisons above, there is no actual overhead in terms of process, the only difference being that we do not commit to disk, in many environments this is a key benefit as it is helps to save premium disk space which would have otherwise been required to hold the App-V cache.

Multi-user

When talking about multi-user environments such as RDS where many users will be using the same platform at once, Windows Memory Management (WMM) will ensure efficiency of RAM usage for App-V applications as it would for any locally installed application. What this means is if one user is already using an App-V application, subsequent launches by other users on the same machine will not trigger multiple repeat streams of the content as WMM can utilize the shared pages already in memory. Read more about Windows Memory Management and how it works here.

clip_image005

In the above graphic we can take the example where one user logs on and launches a line of business application, every user thereafter who launches that same application does not cause WMM to trigger a page read from disk as the assets are already available as shared pages in RAM, therefore the streaming filter is not required to step in to retrieve the content.

Multi-machine

clip_image006The real impact to consider when utilizing SCS is the load on the storage solution itself.

In such scenarios you will have multiple clients requesting content from the content store in potentially a much more frequent and persistent fashion than you would have in normal mode.

Therefore it is important to test and size your backend storage provisioning sufficiently. The approach taken for this will differ vastly between environments and will depend on numerous factors such as connectivity, performance and content size.

Hybrid

There is of course the option to take a hybrid approach which means caching certain applications locally and letting SCS dynamically stream the remaining applications. For example you could put your client into SCS mode and mount your LOB applications locally using the Mount-AppvClientPackage PowerShell command.

California Farm Bureau earns national awards

Social media, video, print and graphic design projects undertaken by the California Farm Bureau Federation have earned top honors from the American Farm Bureau Federation in its annual communications competition. California earned six awards, the most of any state in the annual competition. The awards were presented last week in Portland, Ore., during a ceremony honoring work by state Farm Bureaus across the country.

The bimonthly magazine published by the California Farm Bureau, California Bountiful, was named Best Magazine in the national competition. Written and designed for a non-farm audience, California Bountiful includes features on food, travel, recipes and the people who use, prepare and grow California food and farm products. The contest judge praised California Bountiful for "fun and useful" articles and "outstanding" photography and design.

A story published in the magazine last August earned the award for Best Feature Story. Written by assistant editor Christine Souza, the story focuses on father-and-son farmers in Santa Clara County who grow a full range of peppers-from the sweetest bell pepper to the spiciest Bhut Jolokia variety-and contains a guide to different pepper varieties.

CFBF also earned an award for Best Video Feature Story for a segment broadcast last year on the California Bountiful television program. The story-reported by program host Tracy Sellers with photography and editing by Kevin Burke and Scott Monaco-profiled a San Francisco firm that provides farm-fresh produce to urban offices. The story followed the produce from the small farms where it's grown through the harvesting, packing and delivery processes.

The California Bountiful Facebook page, which represents both the magazine and the television program, earned the award for Best Social Media Tool. A judge praised the Facebook page for its "excellent balance of stories, posting frequency and media types." The page may be found at facebook.com/cabountiful.

A brochure that shows how Farm Bureau works on behalf of farmers, ranchers and their customers earned the award for Best Pamphlet or Brochure. Written by Casey Gudel and designed by Karin Bakotich, the "Protecting Family Farms and Ranches" brochure is intended to be shared with elected officials and to balance facts and figures with the human story behind Farm Bureau policy initiatives.

The sixth award, for Best Graphic Design, recognized the icon created for the 2012 CFBF Annual Meeting. Using the theme, "California Agriculture: Leading the Way," the icon by graphic designer Matt Salvo incorporates an image of a compass-with an almond leaf substituted for its directional arrow-and has been used for additional CFBF events and social media accounts in 2013.

Along with the six awards, CFBF earned honorable mention in three categories, for Ag Alert newspaper, the California Bountiful television program, and for an Ag Alert news story outlining the difficult choices facing cattle ranchers after wildfire damaged grazing land.

The California Farm Bureau Federation works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of more than 74,000 members statewide and as part of a nationwide network of more than 6.2 million Farm Bureau members.

Zoe Saldana plays another alien in Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

SAN DIEGO -- How many more colours can Zoe Saldana be on the big screen?

"Well, the rainbow has a lot of colours," Saldana said in an interview at Comic-Con, laughing. "I dig it. I like being in space. I get to play less girlfriends, more female parts, more women. So I find it meaty."

The actress portrays green-skinned alien Gamora in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" after going blue in James Cameron's "Avatar," a role she's expected to return to for sequels. And she recently reprised her other space-bound character, Uhura, in JJ Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness."

"It's a testament to how creative the people that conceive supernatural and science-fiction kind of stories," Saldana, 35, said of her love for the genre. "They're able to build something out of nothing by just imagining it. I have a huge fascination with that. Filmmakers like JJ, like ("Guardians" director) James (Gunn), like James Cameron. ... You need to be really, really special to do that. So I like being with special people."

Chris Pratt is among Saldana's co-stars in "Guardians," which had been filming for just a few weeks in the U.K. before its actors dropped in to show fans footage at Comic-Con.

Pratt plays Peter Quill, an interplanetary gunslinger known as Star-Lord who assembles a team of aliens to do battle. His character's wit and rebellious spirit has been compared to another planet-hopper, Han Solo.

"You can make the comparison, that's for sure," Pratt said, acknowledging that like "Star Wars," "Guardians" -- set for release next summer -- is "a big space opera."

Saldana was more emphatic: "It's an awesome comparison. Are you kidding me? Harrison Ford!"

But Pratt, 34, said he has more pressing concerns as he returns to set.

"I just feel like, I'm hoping every day that they're not going to fire me," he said. "I'm like, 'So you saw dailies yesterday and I still have my job?' They say 'Yeah!' So for now I do."

How Online Dating Can Hurt Your Self-Esteem | College Gloss

Getting hit on at the beach or bar can get old quickly. Let?s face it, it isn?t like a twenty-something gal to stay single for long, but what?s a girl to do when she just can?t seem to run into the right guy? Maybe it?s time to consider online dating.

Season two of "Catfish: The TV Show," shows that the person behind the profile doesn?t always have harmless intentions. So before you make a profile, consider how it can drain self esteem, and then proceed with caution.

No Satisfaction
A lot of dating sites have some way to indicate interest in a guy -- whether it be a smile, a ?like,? a message, a thumbs up or something similar. Don?t become frustrated when expressing interest in a guy who doesn?t reciprocate those feelings. Maybe he doesn?t get online often, doesn?t check his messages, or he just isn?t interested. If you never take these kinds of risks in real life dating, then you may not be at ease with rejection. Understand rejection is a normal part of life that we?ve all got to face at some point before putting yourself out there in a private message.

You Think Too Much
If you?re spending time seeking out a boyfriend like you shop online for shoes, then you?ve probably got quite a bit of time on your hands. That may be a blessing and a curse. Not meeting guys in person who would interest you may lead your thoughts to get the best of you. Chances are, insecurity will sink in at some point.

Don?t wrack your brain about why you?re single. Men often have the power to control the intensity of sexual and romantic relationships. ? Women do not want to get left out in the cold [in relationships], so they are competing for men on men?s terms,? wrote Kathleen A. Bogle, author of ?Hooking Up: Sex, Dating, and Relationships on Campus? and sociologist at La Salle University. ?This results in more casual hookup encounters that do not end up leading to more serious romantic relationships. Since college women say they generally want ?something more? than just a casual hookup, women end up losing out.?

You?re Being Looked Over
Some dating sites hide pictures from those who aren?t subscribed, while others let you indulge in creeping on your potential beaus. The truth is that online dating is quite similar to meeting in the real world, and attraction plays a big role. When scrolling through girls in the area, guys may pass you by without a thought just because your profile picture doesn?t intrigue them at first glance. Mark Twain wrote to ?never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option,? but in online dating, you?d probably opt for being just that. All you want is to snag the attention of a great guy.

The Guys You?re Attracting Aren?t Attractive to You
Seeing a girl pursue higher education and true love at the same time can be attractive to some guys. It takes a lot of dedication. Unfortunately for the collegiate girl, she may receive an influx of messages from guys with a measly three sentences for a profile. What is she to do when her education and beauty are the bait that reel in guys she?d never want to catch? ?When you own your self-esteem, you?ll find it infinitely easier to attract quality guys into your life,? wrote dating expert Marni Battista. She added that many of the wrong guys can sense a girl?s unconscious thoughts and know exactly what to say to make her ?feel good.? The bottom line: grow in self-confidence.

Online dating can be an alternative for the busy bee who can?t make it out often for a night on the town. For girls who struggle to find a committal young man, online dating might seem appealing. But proceed with caution. If you?re going to make a profile, remember: guys may be messaging several girls, and they may forget to be avidly checking their inbox; you?re not going to attract everyone out there; and you shouldn?t determine your self worth by how many profile views you get. Don?t be discouraged. Online dating won?t break you down if you?ve got a clear sense of self worth and you understand the many reasons you?re a great catch. In time, the right guys will notice that, too.

EU financial pressure on Israel ? Palestinian peace process boost or backfire

RT Saturday 20th July, 2013

Politics Funding cuts is the right tool to keep Israel in its original borders, European MP, Paul Murphy, told RT, while Israeli journalist, Gil Hoffman, argued it'll be harder to get the Palestinians behind the negotiating tables once they've felt EU backing. The European Union has moved to cut off all Israeli entities that operate in the disputed areas of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The measure comes as the EU attempts to pressure Israel to keep the Jewish state within its pre-1967 borders. The decision will affect more than half a million Israeli settlers and has provoked...

Struggling with debt? You are not alone -- and bankruptcy may help

July 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Deciding to file for bankruptcy can be a scary step to take, even when the only other option is to struggle endlessly under the weight of unmanageable debt. When considering bankruptcy, it is not uncommon to feel embarrassed or ashamed. However, you should not let those feelings stop you from taking the steps necessary to get control of your finances and start putting your life back together. If you feel like your debts are out of control, it may comfort you to know that many other Americans are struggling with circumstances similar to yours.

Debt can strike anyone at any time

The truth of the matter is that debt and bankruptcy affects people from all different walks of life, from manual laborers and office professionals to doctors, movie stars and professional athletes. Particularly in the wake of the Great Recession, as the nation grapples with widespread unemployment and deflated real estate values, many people are finding themselves in difficult financial circumstances they may never have anticipated just a few short years ago -- often through no fault of their own.

People today find themselves deep in debt for a wide variety of reasons, including job loss, medical problems, failing investments and even, ironically, the quest for higher education or better employment prospects. When these debts become too much to handle, bankruptcy can often offer a way out of debt and back on the track to good financial health.

Bankruptcy may provide debt relief

If you are considering bankruptcy as a possible solution to your financial difficulties, it may help to learn more about the bankruptcy process and how it may be able to help you find your way out of debt.

For many people, one of the main benefits of bankruptcy is the fact that it often allows borrowers to discharge some or all of their debts, meaning that they no longer have to be repaid. Debts that can frequently be discharged during this type of bankruptcy, which is sometimes called liquidation, include credit card balances, medical bills and other forms of unsecured debt. However, some debts are typically ineligible for discharge during bankruptcy, such as past-due child support, certain taxes and most educational loans.

For people who do not qualify for debt discharge, another type of bankruptcy allows borrowers to restructure their debts and spread the payments out over a number of years. This type of bankruptcy, often referred to as reorganization, has the advantage of giving borrowers an opportunity to catch up on many types of debt that are not eligible for discharge during liquidation bankruptcy.

Automatic stay stops creditors

Another potential benefit of filing for bankruptcy is that it gives borrowers access to a powerful legal tool called an automatic stay. This is a court order that goes into effect as soon as a person files for bankruptcy, barring creditors from taking collection actions against the individual. Because of the automatic stay, filing for bankruptcy can often provide immediate relief from creditor harassment and collection actions, including foreclosure, repossession and wage garnishment.

For many borrowers, bankruptcy provides an opportunity to break the cycle of debt and declining credit, allowing them to begin again with a clean financial slate. Although it requires hard work and careful planning, many people are able to rebuild from the ground up and restore their financial health more quickly than they had expected after filing for bankruptcy. If you think bankruptcy may be right for you, be sure to talk your situation over with a qualified bankruptcy attorney in your area.

President Obama: 'Trayvon Martin Could've Been Me 35 Years Ago'

President Obama made a surprise visit to the White House press room on Friday to speak about the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin case, making some of the boldest and most open remarks about race of his presidency. You can read the full remarks here.

While the president began by commending the judge in the case as "professional" and the jurors as "properly instructed," he also spoke of the case within the much broader context of race in America.

When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said, This could've been my son. Another way of saying that is, Trayvon Martin could've been me 35 years ago. And when you think about why, in the African-American community, at least, there's a lot of pain around what happened here, I think it's important to recognize that the African-American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn't go away.

That history, Obama said, is especially salient to black men. "There are very few African-American men in this country who haven't had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store?that includes me," he said. The same goes for African-American men who have heard "locks click on the doors of cars," or seen a woman in an elevator?"clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off."

A 2008?Wall Street Journal?story, flagged Friday by the reporter?Katie?Rosman, actually attests to?Obama's?experience with this type of stereotyping. As?Rosman?reported, then-state Sen. Barack?Obama?was mistaken for a waiter at a New York party in 2003.?

And those experiences of daily life are a reflection of what the president acknowledged as "a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws?from the death penalty to drug laws. He continued (with our emphasis):

Folks understand the challenges that exist for African-American boys. But they get frustrated, I think, if they feel that there's no context for it and that context is being denied. And that all contributes, I think, to a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, that from top to bottom, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different.

The president's comments also looked at the real problems of "poverty and dysfunction" in African-American communities, saying they can "be traced to a very difficult history." As he said, young African-American men are disproportionately "both the victims and perpetrators of violence," and Trayvon was "statistically more likely to be shot by a peer than he was by somebody else." But that's no excuse for unequal treatment.

The fact that a lot of African-American boys are painted with a broad brush and the excuses given?"Well, there are these statistics out there that show that African-American boys are more violent," using that as an excuse to then see sons treated different causes pain.

To combat these broad social issues,?Obama offered three broad suggestions:

1. Get the Justice Department involved with training local governments to reduce mistrust in the legal system. (It's worth remembering that this episode began with an outcry that Zimmerman wasn't arrested at all after the incident.)

2. Examine local laws?such as "Stand Your Ground"?and see if they "may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case rather than diffuse potential altercations."

3. Think about ways to bolster and support African-American boys so they do not get caught up in the legal system (as the statistics indicate they are more likely to be).

Even despite the discriminatory experiences Obama described, African-Americans perceive less discrimination in some areas today than they did 10 and 20 years ago, according to the results of a new Gallup survey. A shrinking share of blacks blame discrimination for black-white disparities in jobs, income, and housing.

In 1993, for example, 44 percent of blacks said discrimination was mostly to blame for those disparities, while 37 percent say so today. Non-Hispanic whites exhibited a similar shift: 15 percent say discrimination is mostly to blame for the disparities, down from 21 percent two decades ago. Overall, one in five adults today say the disparities are mostly due to discrimination. Older blacks tend to perceive more discrimination than younger blacks, with 47 percent of those 55 and older saying discrimination is mostly to blame for the disparities, compared with 30 percent of those aged 18 to 34.

Obama did offer some hope, citing progress among the youngest generation?including his daughters and their views on race: "When I talk to Malia and Sasha, and I listen to their friends, and I see them interact, they're better than we are," Obama said. "They're better than we were on these issues."

The president's comments were not only surprising because of their content, but also because of the circumstances. The White House gave only a few seconds' notice to reporters before the president entered the briefing room?a rarity for the White House press corps.

Obama's comments Friday were the most he has spoken on race in America as president, and the most in-depth and personal since his remarks in Philadelphia during the 2008 campaign. Those remarks were largely pegged to the controversy surrounding Obama's relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
