Michael Frayn's Fast and Furious Backstage Sex Comedy ?Noises ...

NoisesNewLgFeature21 Michael Frayns Fast and Furious Backstage Sex Comedy Noises Off Sends the Sardines Flying

PlayMakers Repertory Company will present Michael Frayn's uproarious backstage comedy, "Noises Off," on April 4-8, 11-15, and 18-22 in the Paul Green Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art at UNC-Chapel Hill

PlayMakers Repertory Company will conclude its 2011-12 main-stage season with Noises Off, English playwright, screenwriter, and novelist Michael Frayn?s zany 1982 backstage comedy, performed at a breakneck pace with plenty of slapstick, including flying sardines, on April 4-8, 11-15, and 18-22 in the Paul Green Theatre in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?s Center for Dramatic Art.

?I?ve seen several productions of Noises Off through the years, including the Broadway revival (2001) and a few regional productions,? recalls PlayMakers guest director Michael Michetti. ?But I?ve never directed the play before, though it has always been on my ?wish list.??

He adds, ?I think Noises Off is an impeccably crafted play, probably the greatest farce since Feydeau. There?s a good reason the play has been so often produced ? it?s simply one of the funniest things ever written for the stage. And on top of that, it truly is a love letter to the theater.

?Michael Frayn has drafted nine characters who are all tremendously flawed yet lovable, and all immediately recognizable types from the world of the theater,? claims Michetti. ?As the conflicts arise and the circumstances make performing the play-within-the-play seemingly impossible, the old showbiz axiom ?The show must go on!? is put to the test, and somehow these tenacious characters do go on. That?s what I love about actors, and that?s what I love about this play.?

After premiering in1982 at the Lyric Theatre in London, Noises Off made its Broadway debut, directed by Michael Blakemore, on Dec. 11, 1983 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where it played for 553 performances before closing on April 6, 1985. Nominated for four 1984 Tony Awards?, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play, Noises Off won the 1984 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Director of a Play and Outstanding Ensemble Work.

The 1992 motion-picture version of Noises Off, directed by Peter Bogdanovich from a screenplay by Michael Frayn and Marty Kaplan, starred Carol Burnett as Dotty Otley, Michael Caine as Lloyd Fellowes, and John Ritter as Garry Lejeune.

When Noises Off begins, says Los Angeles director Michael Michetti, ?We are watching the opening moments of a [fictional] British bedroom farce entitled Nothing On. Toward the end of her opening monologue, Dotty Otley (Susan Cella) is interrupted by Lloyd Dallas (Jeffrey Blair Cornell), the director of the play-within-the-play.

?We quickly realize that we are, in fact, watching the final dress rehearsal of Nothing On,? explains Michetti, ?and we?re soon introduced to the other members of the acting company: inarticulate Garry Lejeune (Matthew Schneck), pretty but dim Brooke Ashton (Katie Paxton), apologetic Frederick Fellows (Scott Ripley), busybody Belinda Blair (Andrea Cirie) and hearing impaired Selsdon Mowbray (Ray Dooley), as well as the overworked stage manager Tim Allgood (Brandon Garegnani) and assistant stage manager Poppy Norton-Taylor (Kelsey Didion).?

Michetti says, ?In Act One, we see some of the potential conflicts begin to arise as they continue to rehearse the play. By Act Two, they have been on the road for four weeks; and tensions amongst the company have reached the boiling point. We see the same portion of Nothing On performed that we saw in Act One, but this time the perspective is shifted (the set has been turned 180 degrees), and we?re watching the play from the vantage point of backstage.

?While the play is performed on the other side of the set (we hear the dialogue and catch glimpses of it through windows and doors),? says Michetti, ?we watch the actors dealing with a play gone awry, fighting one another, and scrambling to make their next entrances on time ? all played out silently.

?By Act Three, they?re playing their final performance after 12 weeks on the road ? the set is again turned forward; and this time we see the play fall apart before our very eyes, while the determined actors all try in vain to keep it together,? Michael Michetti says.

In addition to director Michael Michetti, the PlayMakers Repertory Company creative team for Noises Off includes PRC producing artistic director Joseph Haj, assistant director Lavina Jadhwani, production manager Michael Rolleri, scenic designer McKay Coble, costume designer David Mickelsen, lighting designer Charlie Morrison, sound designer/engineer Ryan J. Gastelum, dramaturg Mark Perry, and stage manager Sarah Smiley.

Guest director Michael Michetti

Director Michael Michetti says, ?The set is a two-story English country home from the 16th century. And of course, because it?s a farce, there?s a stairway and a whopping total of eight doors. McKay Coble, our scenic designer, has created a set that?s a loving homage to theatrical design and construction from days gone by.

?These days a set like this would probably be constructed of steel,? says Michetti, ?and surfaces like the stone would be covered in dimensional products (like vacuform) for a greater sense of realism. But because we have set this production in the late 1970s (when Michael Frayn began writing Noises Off, and the period when bedroom farces were most popular), [scenic designer McKay Coble] has chosen to have the set constructed of wood, and the surfaces all painted with traditional scenic painting techniques. This becomes even more apparent in Act Two when the set is turned around.?

Michetti adds, ?The main portion of the set is on a turntable and rotates 180 degrees so that we see the back, from the perspective of backstage. It?s at this point that we see all the scenic construction techniques most clearly?.

?The lighting for Acts One and Three look like conventional comedy lighting ? bright and warm colors, with a few traditional techniques like footlights, which are no longer in fashion as they were in the 1970s,? explains Michetti. ?In Act Two, however, we?re watching the action from backstage, so lighting designer Charlie Morrison is lighting the act to contrast between the cooler, dimmer atmosphere of the backstage world, and the bright, warm stage lighting on the other side of the set.

?Because of the decision to set the play in the late 1970s, our costume designer David Mickelsen has a great opportunity to poke fun at the fashions of that period,? says Michetti., ?and I think the costumes are good for a few laughs on their own. Surprisingly, lots of these clothes are back in style now, so David has been able to find many of them new and off the rack. But expect to see platform shoes and flared trousers and topstitching and a number of other kitschy fads of the period?.

?Staging a farce is always complicated because of the challenges of the physical activity (lots of climbing stairs and slamming doors) and the need for a frenetic pace and clockwork timing,? claims director Michael Michetti. ?But the challenges of Noises Off are increased because of the layers of reality ? the ?on stage? farce of Nothing On, and the unintentional, off stage farce of Noises Off. Those contrasts require differentiation between characters as well as subtle shifts in the playing style, all of which pose additional challenges for the actors. Which, I might add, they?re handling remarkably.?

He adds, ?I warned my cast early on that I don?t do ?pity laughs? ? those laughs that members of the production team often do in the rehearsal room whether or not the moment is truly funny, intended to buoy the actors. But the great joy of this play and this brilliant cast is that they do make me laugh ? I have found myself frequently laughing myself silly in the rehearsal room. So I hope you?ll come prepared to leave your troubles behind and have a great, lighthearted night at the theater.?

Analysis: Moody's bank review may mark new era of lower ratings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The largest U.S. banks including Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and Citigroup are facing what could be a historic shift to lower credit ratings which could increase their cost of funding and reduce competitiveness in their capital markets businesses.

Moody's Investors Service is reviewing 15 of the world's largest banks for possible credit ratings downgrades in mid-May, and broad cuts could send banks on average to their lowest historical levels.

In the U.S. Morgan Stanley could see the largest cut after being warned of a possible three-level downgrade to the Baa category, a rating that has traditionally been associated with more speculative risk than some investors and trading partners have been comfortable with.

Bank of America and Citigroup, which are currently lower rated than Morgan Stanley, are also under review for downgrades to the same Baa2 level, and all three-banks are under review to lose their top tier short-term debt rating which would effectively cut their access to some short-dated funding markets.

Moody's action is unlikely to spark funding stress at the banks. Many banks have been dramatically scaling back their reliance on short-term and ratings-sensitive funding since 2008, when fears over exposure to risky mortgage-backed debt caused short-term debt investors to pull back from lending to the firms.

The banks have also increased deposits and capital cushions, making them less vulnerable to the type of client runs that felled banks including Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers.

Nevertheless, new downgrades may disrupt some short-dated debt markets and have knock-on effects for municipal issuers, who sell debt that is backed by the strong bank ratings.

Downgrades may also hurt the lowest-rated banks relative to competitors including JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs which are expected to maintain ratings in the more solid single-A category.

"You're definitely seeing a segmentation between the potentially lower rated institutions and the higher rated ones," said John Guarnera, a U.S. bank credit analyst at Societe Generale in New York. "The biggest issue is the factors that Moody's is focused on are more structural in nature and so it's pretty hard for any institution to do much to offset that."

A Baa rating is less than ideal for brokers over the longer-term as many investors and trading partners remain highly sensitive to the credit risk of bank counterparties and often invest less and trade less with Baa-rated firms than those in the single-A category.

That means they may push more business to higher rated banks, rather than disclose to their own investors a higher exposure to riskier counterparties.

A counterbalancing effect may be that investors will be reluctant to reduce their pool of counterparties in what may end up a very limited number of A-rated institutions remaining.

Downgrades could also increase the collateral needed to post against trades in the U.S. $300 trillion privately-traded derivatives markets and may increase the cost of funding their capital markets activities.

Moody's said the review reflects remaining vulnerabilities in the business model of dealers, even as firms restructure their business to reduce risk.

"When you look at some of the industry characteristics, the competition, the overcapacity, the lack of recurring revenues, it gets very hard to argue that there aren't some speculative characteristics that are more consistent with ratings in the Baa range," said Peter Nerby, senior vice president in the financials group at Moody's in New York.

WINNERS AND LOSERS

There are already some signs that Moody's review is impacting the investment decisions of ratings-sensitive investors.

A JPMorgan analysis of U.S. prime money fund flows in February, when Moody's announced its review, showed some shift away from unsecured commercial paper and certificates of deposits of banks that face possible downgrades, and into banks that had their short-term ratings affirmed.

There was also a decline in lending to U.S. banks through the repurchase agreement market, where banks usually borrow to fund asset purchases. U.K. banks that are unaffected by the review, by contrast, saw an increase in loans.

A lower rating could mean a lender in the repo market requires more collateral to back the loan, or is more averse to taking riskier collateral. That could make the loan more costly, or make it harder to finance purchases of less liquid securities.

"I don't think it's a funding problem in aggregate. It decreases funding flexibility, it may take away or limit certain avenues of borrowing," said Alex Roever, a money market analyst at JPMorgan.

For the worst rated firms, it also leaves them more vulnerable to any further unexpected shocks.

"In some cases the rating agency may walk a bank up to the edge of what many investors view as investible," Roever said. "Then if something were to happen, another down leg in the economy or another crisis, then the bank has little room for error."

RATINGS RELIANCE

Banks, investors and users of derivatives and other ratings sensitive products have been reducing their use of ratings to govern investment decisions since the crisis, when the major rating agencies were criticized for having awarded top ratings to risky mortgage-backed debt that later turned out to be worthless.

The ratings of Moody's and its largest competitors including Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings nonetheless continue to be used to restrict investments including those in the $2.6 trillion money market industry and remain embedded in some derivatives contracts, where downgrades can trigger higher collateral postings.

Morgan Stanley said in a securities filing that it would need to post an additional $6.52 billion in derivatives collateral if Moody's cuts the firm a full three notches.

Morgan Stanley spokesman Mark Lake noted that the ratings trigger affects only 8.0 percent of its over-the-counter contracts and said the bank has been meeting with clients and counterparties and is prepared for any downgrades.

Bank of America has disclosed that a one notch rating downgrade may require additional collateral of $5.4 billion, though this may require cuts from more than one rating agency. The bank has already posted $2.9 billion of the potential new requirements.

Bank of America has disclosed that after ratings cuts last year it entered into talks with clients that involved transferring some derivatives to its bank subsidiary from its lower-rated holding company. A bank spokesman declined comment.

Citigroup said last year that a two-notch downgrade would require around $5.4 billion in additional collateral.

"Our clients tend to be more sophisticated in their analysis than to rely solely on ratings from a single agency. While some clients might note any changes in ratings from Moody's, we don't believe the impact would be material," said spokesman Jon Diat.

A cut of Bank of America's short-term rating could also cause ripples in the $3.7 trillion municipal bond market, where the bank is a large provider of liquidity and letters of credit used to back debt sold by states, cities, hospitals and others.

A downgrade of the bank's short-term rating would mean that these issuers in turn may be cut, or they would need to find an alternative bank to provide the credit backstop.

Money market funds that are rated by Moody's are unable to hold short-term debt that does not hold the highest rating from the agency. JPMorgan estimates that these funds hold around $76 billion in debt from banks facing possible downgrades, though this represents less than 1 percent of their total liabilities. Deborah Cunningham, chief investment officer of money markets at Federated Investors, which oversees $352 billion in assets, said downgrades would require the fund manager to stop investing in the short-term debt of downgraded banks in its Moody's rated funds.

However, "if that were the case, we would be holding them on very short maturity basis anyway," she noted. Any downgrades would also be unlikely to affect Federated's investments in funds that are not rated by Moody's, where the Federated bases decisions on its own credit analysis, she said.

Broad bank downgrades may also accelerate efforts banks have already been making to reduce the size of their businesses, a move that could broadly reduce investments across markets.

"There has been a reduction in the ability of dealer balance sheet to hold securities positions," said Tony Crescenzi, a portfolio manager at PIMCO in Newport Beach, California. "It will speed up if anything the trend that really began in 2007."

Pest Control - Save your dream house from bed bugs

This is a story of one of the house in Toronto, just seven years old house. The family was living very happily and was enjoying their lives. All of a sudden, they started to experience itchiness on their skin. In the beginning they did not know what the problem was, but later they found out but never took an action. During this time bed bugs developed their colonies, started from the basement and then they slowly spread all over the house.

Home owners first tried to use OTC (over the counter products) from different stores to overcome the problem and thought they overcame the problem. They weren't worried anymore, but they were not aware of the actual mystery of the bed bugs. Within no time bed bugs attacked again and started to enjoy the human blood and multiplied very rapidly.

In second attempt the respective owner tried to overcome the bed bug problem by hiring nonlicensed person for the bed bug control. He used some aerosol product which were also purchased from the open market and sprayed their mattress, box spring only. Within one week, bed bugs reappeared and it was now actually worse.

They decided to hire licensed exterminator to get rid of bed bugs, he tried his best, but after few months tinny creature came out again, sucking the blood. This situation was very horrible for land lords. They decided to take the advice from Minatory of health, the inspector came to see the situation and he informed the land lord that they should take care of the next door neighbor too, because they were responsible to spread to next door (because of semidetached house).

After facing this entire situation, the owner decided to take following steps: - Throw out all the furniture of the house. - Leave/vacant the house. - And finally decided to sell the house as early as possible.

Before taking final step for pest control, the owner decided to call PSS (PEST SOLUTION SERVICES).We went there to inspect the situation and found: 4- Bed bug eggs 5- Nymph 6- Adult

Each and every single item such as: - Bed frames - Mattresses - Box springs - Night stands - Door and window frames - Cracks/crevices in ceiling - Cracks/crevices around base boards

Were very highly infested with all stages of bed bugs along with their eggs

We treated each and every single item in the house by using following protocol: VACUUMING - Bed frames (after de-assembling them) - All furniture - Mattresses - Box spring - Travelling suite cases

- Base boards - Carpets (Nymphs were found in the carpet)

STEAMING: - Mattresses - Box springs

Spraying: All wooden furniture was sprayed by a chemical after mixing with water. DUST: Very thin film of the dust was injected in cracks and crevices all over the house. Note: We also treated the following too: - All closets. - All hall ways. - All wash rooms - Kitchen. - Laundry room We also treated all phone jacks and electrical out lets too.

The respective family moved to a hotel for couple of days to stay away from the treated house and came back hoping they do not experience anymore bed bug bites. There results were great and very positive. Now they are enjoying their lives in the same house for which they were thinking to sell because of bed bugs.

Same process was used in second treatment (chemistry of chemicals were changed) after fifteen days. No complaints/no biting/no itching. There was no evidence reported since the treatment, almost one year gone. NOTE: 5- Do not try to overcome the problem of the bed bugs yourself. 6- Do not go for cheaper treatment. 7- Deep inspections required. 8- Bed bug treatment is time consuming.

Media had it all wrong: Commissioner wasn?t racist and Lawal got what he deserved

LAS VEGAS -- It's beyond stunning that anyone has tried to rationalize the behavior of former Strikeforce light heavyweight contender Muhammed Lawal and his manager, Mike Kogan, in light of their actions during and after Tuesday's disciplinary hearing in front of the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Lawal's situation is so vastly different from those of Miguel Torres, Rashad Evans, Forrest Griffin and innumerable others who made, ahem, unwise public comments.

On Jan. 17, Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada commission, announced that Lawal had flunked a post-fight urinalysis following a Jan. 7 victory over Lorenz Larkin at the Hard Rock. Test results indicated he'd tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone.

On Tuesday, the commission heard from Lawal and Kogan and then suspended Lawal for nine months and fined him $39,000. Afterward, Lawal went to Twitter and ripped commissioner Pat Lundvall, calling her in a now-deleted tweet, "a racist [expletive]." Lundvall is white and Lawal is black. Lawal wrote:

I honestly feel like Lundvall was a racist [expletive] asking me if I can read or speak english

Not long after Lawal's tweet, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced the promotion had released Lawal.

Suddenly, it seemed, the MMA media was outraged. Specifically, many in the MMA media were apparently angered that Lawal was released by responding on Twitter to what he felt was an offensive question from Lundvall, who had asked him if he could read and understand English.

In a roundtable discussion on MMA Fighting, veteran journalist Mike Chiappetta said:

I can understand his anger for being asked such a degrading question.

Luke Thomas, who was doing the roundtable with Chiappetta, said Lundvall had been "patronizing" toward Lawal.

The very talented columnist Ben Fowlkes also took issue with Lundvall in his column on Sports Illustrated.com:

The old "Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth?" routine is not a rhetorical device one employs in respectful conversation with an equal. It's something you do only when you know the other person has to sit there and take it.

And my colleague at Cagewriter, Maggie Hendricks, attempted to compare Lawal's situation to that of Torres and Evans, among others. There were many others, but all missed the mark badly in their assessment of the situation.

Finally, Kogan railed against Lundvall's line of questioning in a piece on MMA Junkie on Wednesday. Kogan told reporter Steven Marrocco that Lundvall's manner of questioning was inappropriate.

There are ways to establish if a fighter understands what's going on or not. It was already done before the hearing even started. The very first thing they asked him was, 'Do you understand what's going on? Do you understand the charges against you? Do you understand you can be represented by [counsel]?' And he said yes. So to come back 20 minutes later and ask the man if he speaks and understands English is very offensive.

Lundvall is a very prominent litigator in Nevada, a highly respected attorney at one of the state's top firms. She's hardly the "idiot" that she was made out to be by many of my media brethren who were all too quick to try to run to Lawal's rescue without considering what happened.

First, Lundvall was doing what any legal questioner does. She was laying a foundation. She believed that Lawal had been dishonest. On a questionnaire he filled out at the weigh-in on Jan. 6, Lawal denied he had been injured or had taken any prescription or over-the-counter medications in the last two weeks. To the question that asked, "Have you had any injury to your knees, ankles, or feet that needed special evaluation/exam," Lawal checked no.

Kogan had told Christopher Eccles, the Nevada deputy attorney general who represents the athletic commission, on Jan. 18 that Lawal took no supplements. In an email to Eccles the next day, Kogan reversed course and said Lawal had taken supplements.

In his email to Eccles on Jan. 19, Kogan wrote:

I guess I misspoke on the supplements that Mo takes my bad on that, I never seen him take any so I assumed he does not. We made a list of all the supplements and meds that he has taken some of them on regular bases as supplement, some temporality or intermittently and some were administered by the doctor that was taking care of his knee.

Lundvall's reason for asking Lawal if he read and understood English is what lawyers do when they're building a case during questioning. She was boxing him in and leaving him no room. When he said yes, she asked about why he didn't disclose the knee injury on the questionnaire he filled out at the weigh-in and why he didn't mention he was taking something for it.

It had zero racist intent. She was trying to expose that Lawal hadn't been forthcoming with the commission until he was forced to do so.

It's also interesting to note that Lundvall uses the line of questioning frequently with fighters. On March 23, ?2011, boxer Michael Shane Steele tested positive for an anabolic steroid. Steele, who is white, appeared before the commission on May 20, 2011, and underwent rigorous questioning from Lundvall.

According to a commission transcript, the following exchange took place between Lundvall and Steele:

Lundvall: Do you have any other information that you are willing to share with the Commission to explain why you tested positive for banned substances?

Steele: None. Only the supplements I took and what I was trying to accomplish in taking them.

Lundvall: Do you read English?

Steele: Yes, ma'am.

Lundvall: Do you understand the written word?

Steele: Yes, I believe so.

Lundvall used nearly identical language in speaking to Steele, who is white, as she did to Lawal, who is black. The point is, Lundvall wasn't talking down to Lawal or taunting him because of his race. She was trying to establish why he hadn't answered the questions truthfully.

Lawal's case is different from the others because the others, such as Torres, Evans, Griffin and, yes, UFC president Dana White, only said or wrote something stupid.

Lawal scored a hat trick of errors:

? He flunked a drug test, which Torres, Evans and Griffin did not do.

? He was untruthful on his questionnaire.

? He made an outrageous and ill-advised comment on social media, attacking a prominent regulator. The move could come back to haunt the company.

Lawal, I believe, is a good guy. He's quick with a quip and extraordinarily accessible to the media, which is why he's so beloved.

But it doesn't matter if you're a good guy or not. The facts are the facts. Lundvall was only doing her job and White and the folks at Zuffa were only doing theirs when they cut Lawal.

Hopefully, he'll be brought back at some point, like has happened to Torres, Nate Marquardt and so many others in the past.

Let's get over this Mo was mistreated nonsense, though. He got what he deserved.

Special Delivery is book two in the Freedom (human trafficking) series. For anyone who may not have read book one, Deliver Me From Evil, can you fill us in on the focus of the series in general, and Special Delivery in particular?
?
The Freedom series is a three-book fiction series built around the horrifying topic of human trafficking. People often ask me why I decided to write about such a dark topic. First, I explain that I?m not writing about a dark topic; I?m writing about the Light that shines in that darkness. And second, I believe the Church should be at the forefront of the modern-day abolition movement to set the captives (modern-day slaves) free. The three books in this series specifically follow the life of a young woman named Mara, who was sold into sexual slavery by her own parents in Mexico, and then smuggled across the border into San Diego by her uncle who then served as her pimp. A strong sub-plot throughout the series tells of two sisters in the Golden Triangle of Thailand, Chanthra and Lawan, who are also trapped in a brothel. Finally, a teenage girl named Francesca, kidnapped in Juarez, Mexico, and forced into prostitution, is introduced in book two. Special Delivery picks up two years after book one, Deliver Me From Evil, ends, and continues with the stories of Mara and Lawan, as well as others carried over from book one. Mara hopes she is finally free to pursue her own life because she was rescued from the brothel and her testimony helped lock up her uncle for life. But the man has underground connections and is driven by revenge to reach out from behind bars and deliver the ultimate punishment to his niece.

This isn?t the first fiction series you?ve written on nationwide and even worldwide social issues, the one previous to this being the persecuted Church. What draws you to these difficult topics?

As a Christian, I believe I am compelled to use my God-given gifts to honor God in all I do?and that includes exposing the deeds of darkness, calling sinners to repentance, and taking a stand for righteousness by doing all I can to help rescue those who are suffering. I dare not turn my back on ?the least of these.? I also believe that God placed this sort of burden on my heart even before I became a Christian at the age of 26. I?ve always been a champion of the underdog, a ?soap-box? preacher, if you will. When I met Jesus, I simply redirected that passion toward His people, realizing I couldn?t effect real change in my own strength anyway.

With your obvious passion to right social and moral wrongs through the power of the Gospel, how did writing and speaking enter into that?

I?ve known I wanted to be a writer since I was a child?never wanted to do anything else. When I was a teenager I told my then boyfriend (now husband) that I was going to be a writer one day. What a blessing that God allowed me to fulfill that dream! After becoming a believer and growing in my faith, it was natural to take my passion to fight for others and incorporate it into my writing. Speaking, on the other hand, was an entirely different story. I was terrified of public speaking when I was young, and the day I received Christ I made a ?bargain? with God, promising to do anything He asked of me?so long as it didn?t include public speaking. (Does God have a sense of humor or what???) Now, when I stand in front of audiences where I believe God has called me to speak (and actually find myself enjoying it!), I tell my listeners that if God has called them to do something and they feel it?s impossible, they can consider me their ?visual aid? that NOTHING is impossible with God IF we will simply take that first step of obedience and let Him fulfill His purpose in and through us.

With the topics of the worldwide persecuted Church and human trafficking under your belt, what other issues are you dealing with in your writing?

My Christmas 2011 book, A Christmas Journey Home, dealt with the immigration/border problem, and my Christmas 2012 novel, Unexpected Christmas Hero, will be about homelessness in America. The next issues-related fiction series I have on tap?which I am just starting to write, by the way?is called the ?Patches of Courage? series and will begin releasing in late January 2013. Book one is The Moses Quilt, based on the life of Harriet Tubman, and will be followed by The Christmas Quilt and The Impossible Quilt. This series of books will highlight historical American women whose Christian faith enabled them to walk in great courage and make a difference in the lives of countless people.

My Review:

Special Delivery is the story of Mara, who is now free from sex slavery.? It is the story of her life.? Yet it?s more than just her life.? It?s the suspense of revenge from Jefe.? It?s the opportunity to help other girls get free.? Will Mara find the grace to work through her personal issues and reach forth and help?

With Kathi?s incorporation of a tensive romantic relationship that intrigues both Jonathan and Mara, would Mara be able and willing to have a relationship that?s ?normal? with a husband?? Would Jonathan be able to handle her brokenness?

Though this malady is worked feverishly in other countries, such as Lawan?s story and experiences, the United States is one of the biggest perpetrators of sex slavery.? It?s an extension of what we have known as pimps and prostitutes, only in an uglier way, as it includes girls from ages five and up.

Kathi once again fleshes out the reality of sex trafficking and the devastation it brings upon the girls?mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.? You will see how the repugnant self-centered, self-serving mindsets of the perpetrators clash violently with those willing to give their lives to help girls trapped in this horrendous situation.? That there are lost, sleazy men and women who will do the bidding of the perpetrators.? Her characters dig deep under your skin, crying out for you to help.? It?s personal, drawing you into the devastation with a cry for freedom and abolition.

You will find that Special Delivery is just as compelling as Deliver Me From Evil.? Both books are meant to draw you into the battle and expose the debauchery of humankind, bringing justice to the perpetrators and freedom for the slaves. What is God calling you to do?? Will you heed the call?

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for posting the author?s interview on my blog. This blog tour is managed by Christian Speakers Services (http://ChristianSpeakersServices.com).? No monetary compensation was exchanged.

Once considered mainly 'brain glue,' astrocytes' power revealed

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? A type of cell plentiful in the brain, long considered mainly the stuff that holds the brain together and oft-overlooked by scientists more interested in flashier cells known as neurons, wields more power in the brain than has been realized, according to new research published March 29 in Science Signaling.

Neuroscientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center report that astrocytes are crucial for creating the proper environment for our brains to work. The team found that the cells play a key role in reducing or stopping the electrical signals that are considered brain activity, playing an active role in determining when cells called neurons fire and when they don't.

That is a big step forward from what scientists have long considered the role of astrocytes -- to nurture neurons and keep them healthy.

"Astrocytes have long been called housekeeping cells -- tending to neurons, nurturing them, and cleaning up after them," said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., professor of Neurosurgery and leader of the study. "It turns out that they can influence the actions of neurons in ways that have not been realized."

Proper brain function relies on billions of electrical signals -- tiny molecular explosions, really -- happening remarkably in sync. Recalling the face of a loved one, swinging a baseball bat, walking down the street -- all those actions rely on electrical signals passed instantly along our nerves like a molecular hot potato from one brain cell to another.

For that to happen, the molecular brew of chemicals like sodium, calcium and potassium that brain cells reside in must be just right -- and astrocytes help to maintain that balanced environment. For instance, when a neuron sends an impulse, or fires, levels of potassium surrounding the cell jump dramatically, and those levels must come down immediately for the brain to work properly. Scientists have long known that that's a job for astrocytes -- sopping up excess potassium, ending the nerve pulse, and restoring the cells so they can fire again immediately.

In the paper in Science Signaling, Nedergaard's team discovered an expanded role for astrocytes. The team learned that in addition to simply absorbing excess potassium, astrocytes themselves can cause potassium levels around the neuron to drop, putting neuronal signaling to a stop.

"Far from only playing a passive role, astrocytes can initiate the uptake of potassium in a way that affects neuronal activity," said Nedergaard. "It's a simple, yet powerful mechanism for astrocytes to rapidly modulate neuronal activity."

Nedergaard has investigated the secret lives of astrocytes for more than two decades. She has shown how the cells communicate using calcium to signal. Nearly 20 years ago in a paper in Science, she pioneered the idea that glial cells like astrocytes communicate with neurons and affect them. Since then, has been a lot of speculation by other scientists that chemicals call gliotransmitters, such as glutamate and ATP, are key to this process.

In contrast, in the latest research Nedergaard's team found that another signaling system involving potassium is at work. By sucking up potassium, astrocytes quell the firing of neurons, increasing what scientists call "synaptic fidelity." Important brain signals are crisper and clearer because there is less unwanted activity or "chatter" among neurons that should not be firing. Such errant neuronal activity is linked to a plethora of disorders, including epilepsy, schizophrenia, and attention-deficit disorder.

"This gives us a new target for a disease like epilepsy, where signaling among brain cells is not as controlled as it should be," said Nedergaard, whose team is based in the Division of Glia Disease and Therapeutics of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine. of the Department of Neurosurgery

The first authors of the paper are Fushun Wang, Ph.D., research assistant professor of Neurosurgery; and graduate student Nathan Anthony Smith. They did much of the work by using a sophisticated laser-based system to monitor the activity of astrocytes in the living brain of rats and mice. The work by Smith, a graduate student in the University's neuroscience program, was supported by a Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

Other authors from Rochester include Takumi Fujita, Ph.D., post-doctoral associate; Takahiro Takano, Ph.D., assistant professor; Qiwu Xu, technical associate; and Lane Bekar, Ph.D., formerly research assistant professor, now at the University of Saskatchewan. Also contributing were Akemichi Baba of Hyogo University of Health Sciences in Japan, and Toshio Matsuda of Osaka University in Japan.

Nedergaard notes that the complexity and size of our astrocytes is one of few characteristics that differentiate our brains from rodents. Our astrocytes are bigger, faster, and much more complex in both structure and function. She has found that astrocytes contribute to conditions like stroke, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, and spinal cord injury.

"Astrocytes are integral to the most sophisticated brain processes," she added.

The work was funded by the G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Charitable Foundation and NINDS.
