KHARTOUM, Sudan ? Sudan's army says it has captured a rebel stronghold along its border with South Sudan.
The area was the scene of months of intense fighting.
Army spokesman Col. Sawarmy Khalid said Thursday the town of Kurmuk in the Blue Nile State has been "totally liberated and secured" from forces loyal to its newly founded southern neighbor. No comment was available from South Sudan.
Soon after South Sudan achieved independence in July, tension flared between in the border regions, and the two sides failed to observe a peace agreement.
The border states have communities and armed militias loyal to the South.
Khalid said the rebel forces "ran away" and said his troops also incurred losses, without elaborating.
Rights groups have accused Sudan of indiscriminate violence in the border areas.
