Many cities leaving Wall Street protesters alone (AP)

NEW YORK ? While more U.S. cities are resorting to force to break up the Wall Street protests, many others ? Philadelphia, New York, Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., among them ? are content to let the demonstrations go on for now.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, for example, said Friday that the several hundred protesters sleeping in Zuccotti Park, the unofficial headquarters of the movement that began in mid-September, can stay as long as they obey the law.

"I can't talk about other cities," he said. "Our responsibilities are protect your rights and your safety. And I think we're trying to do that. We're trying to act responsibly and safely."

Still, the city made life a lot harder for the demonstrators: Fire inspectors seized a dozen cans of gasoline and six generators that powered lights, cooking equipment and laptops, saying they were safety hazards.

In the span of three days this week, police broke up protest encampments in Oakland, Calif., Atlanta and, early Friday, San Diego and Nashville, Tenn.

State troopers in Nashville cracked down after authorities imposed a curfew on the protest. Twenty-nine people were arrested and later released after a judge said the demonstrators were not given enough time to comply with the brand-new rule. They received citations for trespassing instead.

Fifty-one people were arrested in San Diego, where authorities descended on a three-week-old encampment at the Civic Center Plaza and Children's Park and removed tents, canopies, tables and other furniture.

Officials there cited numerous complaints about human and animal feces, urination, drug use and littering, as well as damage to city property ? problems reported in many other cities as well. Police said the San Diego demonstrators can return without their tents and other belongings after the park is cleaned up.

Earlier this week, in the most serious clashes of the movement so far, more than 100 people were arrested and a 24-year-old Iraq War veteran suffered a skull fracture after Oakland police armed with tear gas and bean bag rounds broke up a 15-day encampment and repulsed an effort by demonstrators to retake the site.

But other cities have rejected aggressive tactics, at least so far, some of them because they want to avoid the violence seen in Oakland or, as some have speculated, because they are expecting the protests to wither anyway with the onset of cold weather.

Officials are watching the encampments for health and safety problems but say that protesters exercising their rights to free speech and assembly will be allowed to stay as long as they are peaceful and law-abiding.

"We're accommodating a free speech event as part of normal business and we're going to continue to enforce city rules," said Aaron Pickus, a spokesman for the mayor of Seattle, where about 40 protesters are camping at City Hall. "They have the right to peacefully assemble. Ultimately what the mayor is doing is strike a balance."

Authorities have similarly taken a largely hands-off approach in Portland, Ore., where about 300 demonstrators are occupying two parks downtown; Memphis, Tenn., where the number of protesters near City Hall has ranged from about a dozen to about 100; and in Salt Lake City, where activists actually held a vigil outside police headquarters this week to thank the department for not using force against them.

In the nation's capital, U.S. Park Police distributed fliers this week at an encampment of more than 100 tents near the White House. And while the fliers listed the park service regulations that protesters were violating, including a ban on camping, a park police spokesman said the notices should not be considered warnings.

In Providence, R.I., Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said the protesters will not be forcibly removed even after the Sunday afternoon deadline he set for them. He said he intends to seek their ouster by way of court action, something that could take several weeks.

"When you see police having to quell disturbances with tear gas or other means, it's not what the police want and it's not what we want to see in our society," Pare said.

Similarly, in London, church and local government authorities are going to court to evict protesters camped outside St. Paul's Cathedral ? though officials acknowledged Friday it could take weeks or months to get an order to remove the tent city.

Several hundred protesters against economic inequality and corporate excesses have been camped outside the building since Oct. 15. On Oct. 21 cathedral officials shut the church, saying the campsite represented a health and safety hazard.

It was the first time the 300-year-old church, one of London's best-known buildings, had closed since German planes bombed the city during World War II.

In Minneapolis, where dozens have been sleeping overnight on a government plaza between a county building and City Hall, the three-week-old occupation has been far tamer than those in other cities, with only a few arrests.

Sheriff Rich Stanek has made it a practice to meet with protesters daily to talk about their issues and the day ahead, and he has refused to engage what he called "the 1 percent" who want to cause trouble.

"We decided that's not the tactic we want to take. Doing that sometimes requires biting your tongue," he said. He added: "Some people have said that's `Minnesota nice.' It's a balance."

Asteroid Lutetia Revealed As a Protoplanet

If you knew that an oval is a plane figure, then the third dimension would be nonexistent, not redundant.

I think you mean ovoid or ellipsoid or prolate or cylindrical or bonelike.

Which is what 99% of scientific and non-scientific minds would assume.

The other 1% would be smartasses who would try to slip oblate, flattened, or disclike past us, but we ain't buying any of that weak sauce today.

Shots near US embassy in Sarajevo

A man armed with hand grenades and an automatic weapon opened fire outside the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia Friday in what authorities called a terrorist attack. A policeman and the gunman were wounded, but the embassy said none of its employees was hurt.

Sarajevo Mayor Alija Behmen said the gunman "got off a tram with a Kalashnikov and started shooting at the American Embassy." Witnesses told Bosnian television that the man urged pedestrians to move away, saying he was targeting only the embassy.

He wore a beard and was dressed in an outfit with short pants that reveal his ankles ? typical for followers of the conservative Wahhabi branch of Islam.

One police officer guarding the building was wounded before police surrounded the gunman. After a 30-minute standoff, the sound of a single shot echoed and AP video showed the shooter slump to the ground.

Police arrested the wounded man ? who one of Bosnia's three presidents said is a foreigner ? and took him away in an ambulance as pedestrians cowered behind buildings and vehicles. Hospital spokeswoman Biljana Jandric told The Associated Press the gunman had a minor wound to his leg, and would spend the night at the hospital before being released into police custody.

State Prosecutor Dubravko Campara identified the shooter as Mevlid Jasarevic, from Novi Pazar, the administrative capital of the southern Serbian region of Sandzak, who was tried in Austria for robbery in 2005.

Campara said Jasarevic had crossed the Serbian border into Bosnia Friday morning. He said Jasarevic had two hand grenades with him when he was arrested and is also currently under investigation by Serbian police, but did not detail why.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed his identity and said he is 23 years old. Bosnian TV said Jasarevic is a Wahhabi follower.

The Wahhabis are an extremely conservative branch which is rooted in Saudi Arabia and linked to religious militants in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Western intelligence reports have alleged that the tense, impoverished area of Sandzak, along with Muslim-dominated regions in Bosnia, are rich ground for recruiting so-called "white al-Qaida" ? Muslims with Western features who could easily blend into European or U.S. cities and carry out attacks.

The Islamic extremists joined Bosnia's 1992-95 war for independence. They were largely tolerated by the U.S. and the West because of their opposition to late Serbia's strongman Slobodan Milosevic's quest to create "Greater Serbia" out of the former Yugoslav republics.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said several bullets struck the outside wall of the embassy, but that all embassy personnel were safe. She said the wounded police officer had been assigned to protect the embassy. Ambassador Patrick Moon expressed his gratitude for the swift response by the police.

"Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with those who put their lives on the line to protect the embassy," Nuland told reporters.

Bakir Izetbegovic, one of Bosnia's three presidents, issued a statement condemning "the terrorist attack on the embassy of the United States."

"The United States is a proven friend of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its government and its people supported us in the most difficult moments in our history and nobody has the right to jeopardize our relations," he said.

Zeljko Komsic, chairman of Bosnia's presidency, said told AP that authorities have not yet determined whether the attack "was the act of an individual, or something organized."

"But whatever it was, it is not just an attack on the U.S. Embassy or the U.S., it is also an attack on Bosnia and Herzegovina," he said.

Bosnian Muslims are extremely protective of their relations with the U.S. because it was the driving force behind NATO military intervention and brokered a peace agreement that ended Bosnia's war.

The head of Bosnia's Islamic Community, Mustafa Ceric, condemned the attack late Friday, and said "the attack on the U.S. Embassy is an attack on us."

"We will confront every individual or group that jeopardizes the peace and security in this city and this country," he said in a statement.

Serbian police said Jasarevic was briefly arrested a year ago for brandishing "a large knife" during a visit by the U.S. Ambassador to Serbia and other Western envoys to Novi Pazar.

Now showing: Anatomy of a disaster in 3-D

In the chaotic aftermath of a natural disaster, recording the devastation in minute detail might seem like a macabre pursuit. But researchers are increasingly doing just that with laser technology that, they say, can help them better understand the colossal forces at work, and can help better prepare communities for the next catastrophe.

Research teams are documenting the effects, both large and small, of natural disasters from earthquakes to tsunamis to wildfires with astonishing precision ? and producing some impressive visuals along the way.

LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection And Ranging, allows researchers to move into the field right after a calamity and, in the space of a few hours, gather data that reveal a disaster's footprint ? much like detectives photographing a crime scene, but in 3-D and with centimeter-level detail.

After returning to the safety of a computer lab, researchers process their data and can produce an animated reconstruction of the disaster site.

"The idea is that it's a virtual world you can explore without being physically present in that dangerous environment. You can move through it in the software," said Oregon State University assistant professor Michael Olsen, an engineer who presented work on the use of LiDAR in disaster areas at the recent Geological Society of America meeting in Minneapolis.

Laser beams, in 3-D!
Instead of relying on light in the environment to reflect off a surface, like a traditional camera, a LiDAR scanner sends out its own "light" ? a laser ? and, by measuring the time it takes for the laser to bounce back to the device, it can layer distance into an image.

Olsen said the ground-based LiDAR systems he uses, which take roughly 100,000 data points per second, scan up and down and rotate 360 degrees. Once the system is set up on its tripod, a single scan takes about two minutes.

"It's line of sight, so whatever you see is what you get," he explained. Imaging a large area requires multiples scans, Olsen told OurAmazingPlanet.

Olsen led a team from OSU and the University of Hawaii that went to Chile to survey damage from the massive earthquake that struck in February 2010. The magnitude 8.8 quake sent a devastating tsunami crashing ashore, and Olsen's group visited some of the most-affected towns and villages along the coast.

The team arrived about two months after the catastrophe. "The ideal is to be there about a week after," Olsen said. "If you go too soon, search and rescue is going on and you don't want to be in the way," but if you go too late, cleanup efforts will have washed away some of the disaster's fingerprints, he said.

The research team also used LiDAR to document the aftermath of Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

"We want to capture the perishable data," Olsen said. Seemingly minute details such as cracks in a building, or the way rivers of mud flow around a foundation, offer clues for earth scientists who are piecing together the anatomy of a tsunami wave or an earthquake.

In addition, those details help engineers and architects figure out how various parts of a building hold up during and immediately after a natural disaster.

"Ultimately, it translates back to better building codes," Olsen said. "The thing we always learn after these reconnaissance efforts is where we're overdesigning ? spending too much money or too much material in a certain spot that isn't really making a difference ? (compared) to areas where we're underdesigning."

One animation Olsen's team put together takes a viewer through the tsunami-battered town of Dichato, Chile. It took three or four hours and 20 different scan positions to gather the data, then two weeks back in the lab, running the scans, along with digital photographs and GPS data, through computer programs, to produce the sequence, which has the look of a post-apocalyptic video game.

Before disaster strikes
Although post-disaster LiDAR scans are helpful, before-and-after disaster images are even more helpful, researchers said, because the scans can mathematically alert an observer to minute changes.

Federal entities such as the U.S. Geological Survey and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and various state agencies have begun to use aircraft-mounted LiDAR to map everything from flood plains to earthquake-prone regions to provide baseline pictures that can be used for comparison when an emergency does hit.

"In a flood, you can see, 'Oh, this channel eroded 1 centimeter.' You can make that measurement from these data, literally at the centimeter level. That's why earth scientists are so excited about it," said geologist Stephen DeLong, an assistant research professor at the University of Arizona who uses LiDAR.

DeLong uses ground-based LiDAR to look at the after-effects of wildfires ? specifically, how fairly minor rainstorms can lead to major flooding when they hit a burned-out landscape. He presented research at the GSA meeting on this year's infamous Horseshoe Two wildfire in Arizona, based on LiDAR scans of mountainous regions before and after the disaster.

"There have been fires this year and last year in Arizona where the floods after the fires were more destructive than the fires themselves, to humans and to property," DeLong told OurAmazingPlanet.

DeLong said LiDAR mapping can help land-management agencies predict where floods and debris flows will land after wildfires.

"Last year in Flagstaff, Ariz., all these people who lived downstream of the fires had their homes destroyed by floods and sediment, so the public needs to know about these things," DeLong said.

As a fairly new tool for the earth science community, LiDAR presents some challenges, DeLong said. The technology was developed more for civil engineers, and has been used more frequently to image the sharp-angled constructions made by humans, as opposed to the undulating profile of a cliff wall or a hilly forest.

But LiDAR scanning means that even the most subtle effects of a natural disaster can no longer escape notice.

"We're making these very detailed maps of how landscapes are changing as a result of floods or landslides or earthquakes," DeLong said. "This allows you to work in three dimensions. You need a three-dimensional method to look at how three-dimensional landforms change."

Halloween costumes: Nicki Minaj, Angry Birds, Captain America top 2011 lists

Halloween costumes: The best selling Halloween costumes for 2011 range from rapper Nicki Minaj to Angry Birds, depending on the source.

The hottest Halloween costume in 2011?

Rapper Nicki Minaj is the No. 1 most popular search for Halloween costumes on Google, according to the New York Daily News.

There are very few off-the-shelf Nicki Minaj costumes, but plenty of online marketers are stepping in to fill the Niki Minaj prepackaged void. "In a tutorial with 300,000 views, a YouTube poster shares tips on applying vibrant makeup, picking the perfect pink-infused outfit (down to the animal-print shoes) and finding the right wig," notes the New York Daily News.

But which Halloween costumes are the bestsellers depends on your source, when you conduct the research, and how you slice and dice the data.

According to Time, the most popular Google searches for Halloween costume: 1. Angry Birds 2. Black Swan, 3. Playboy Bunny.

Nicki Minaj doesn't show up until No. 4, according to Time.

Check with SortPrice.com, the online Halloween bestsellers among adults are Captain America, the Green Lantern, and Where's Waldo. No Nick Minaj in sight. For kids, it's Harry Potter, princesses, and the Green Lantern.

Paul McIntire, sales associate of Halloween City, in West Bloomfield, Mich., told Patch.com that zombies, vampires, pirates, and medical staff are the most popular costumes for adults in their store.

Whoever you believe, these lists offer a window on the zeitgeist of American pop culture. Movies and television are the prime inspirations.

But zombies?

And why would Captain America, a movie that was No. 8 in terms of box office sales, be a more popular costume than, say, Harry Potter (No. 1 in box office sales). Green Lantern costumes are also selling well (No. 9) in box office sales.

Are Americans seeking refuge in superhero personas during times of economic uncertainty?

The National Retail Federation offers an explanation for zombies: The AMC series "The Walking Dead." "Zombies are everywhere you turn and consumers often take Hollywood and pop-culture and turn it into a costume," Kathy Grannis, spokeswoman for the NRF, told CNN.

According to the NRF, Americans will spend an average of $72.31 on costumes, candy, and decorations ? up 9 percent over last year. Total spending for the holiday is expected to reach $6.86 billion, the most in the NRF survey's nine-year history. Halloween, notes the NRF, is no longer just for school-age trick-or-treaters. It's increasingly an adult party holiday.

And Angry Birds? Is an Angry Birds costume another medium for angry Americans ? be they tea party activists or those in the Occupy Wall Street movement ? to express their frustration? Or does it have something to do with how much screen time this game is getting?

At an estimated 400 million downloads, and counting, this is one of the most popular online games of all time.

Veterinary researchers discover first US strains of hepatitis E virus from rabbits

Veterinary researchers discover first US strains of hepatitis E virus from rabbits

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Researchers in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech have identified the first strains of hepatitis E virus from farmed rabbits in the United States. It is unknown whether the virus can spread from rabbits to humans.

Caitlin Cossaboom of Salisbury, Md., a second-year student in the combined Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Ph.D. program in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, is the first author of a publication entitled "Hepatitis E Virus in Rabbits, Virginia, USA" in the November issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases, published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Although researchers found hepatitis E virus in rabbits in China in 2009, this is the first time the virus has been identified in rabbits in the United States or anywhere outside of China," Cossaboom said.

Dr. X.J. Meng, professor of biomedical sciences and pathobiology in the veterinary college, Cossaboom's graduate advisor, and senior author of the study, identified the first animal strains of hepatitis E virus ? swine hepatitis E virus from pigs ? in 1997. Following the landmark study on swine hepatitis E virus by Meng and his colleagues at the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, researchers began to consider hepatitis E virus a zoonotic virus.

"Since 1997, researchers have found hepatitis E virus in pigs essentially in every swine-producing country and shown that the virus from pigs can infect humans," said Meng, who added that his lab also identified avian hepatitis E virus from chickens in the United States and that other researchers later discovered strains of the virus in other animal species, including rats, mongoose, deer, and wild boars.

Hepatitis E is an acute hepatic disease caused by infection with an RNA virus that has a fecal-oral transmission route. The disease is mainly prevalent in developing countries, though sporadic cases have been reported in industrialized countries such as the United States. The mortality rate associated with hepatitis E virus infection in humans is generally less than 1 percent, but it can reach up to 28 percent in infected pregnant women.

The virus has at least four distinct genotypes. Genotypes 1 and 2 infect only humans and typically occur in developing countries with poor sanitation conditions. Meanwhile, genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotic, can spread from animals to humans, and are found in both industrialized and developing countries.

"It is worth noting that the strains of the virus found in rabbits in the U.S. and China closely relate to genotype 3, a genotype that has been shown to transfer from animals to humans," Meng said. "The question is, 'Do the strains of hepatitis E virus in rabbits infect humans?' We don't know, but the possibility is there and more research is needed to address this potential concern."

Cossaboom and her colleagues collected fecal and serum samples from 85 rabbits from two farms in Virginia ? one in Southwest Virginia and one in Eastern Virginia ? and found that approximately 50 percent of the rabbits were exposed to the hepatitis E virus. Researchers were able to genetically identify four isolates of the virus from the two rabbit farms.

"For future research, we are particularly interested in the potential zoonotic infection of humans and food safety concerns," Cossaboom said.

She added that pigs can serve as "animal reservoirs" for genotypes 3 and 4 hepatitis E virus. In other words, the pigs can carry and shed the virus, and occasionally the virus may transmit to humans. "However, it is unknown if the virus from rabbits can infect across species or serve as a reservoir," Cossaboom said.

There are five known types of viral hepatitis: Hepatitis A transmits from person to person from ingesting contaminated food and water. Hepatitis B and C spread by blood-to-blood contact; the hepatitis C virus can also cause chronic infection and, in some cases, liver cancer. Hepatitis D occurs in individuals who already have hepatitis B. Although all of these viruses, including hepatitis E virus, target the liver, none of them are genetically related.

IKORODU, Nigeria ? Seasonal rains have sent water flowing over riverbanks again in Nigeria, raising the risk of cholera and disease as government appears unable to cope with the flooding.

Canoes are being used where cars used to drive in communities just outside of Ikorodu, a city itself just outside of Nigeria's megacity of Lagos.

In one community, water flowed over an outhouse, a warning sign of cholera. Earlier this month, UNICEF said nearly 2,500 have died in one of the biggest cholera outbreaks West Africa has ever seen this year, with deaths from Congo to Mali, including Nigeria.

Locals blame government officials for not seeing their plight, though several acknowledged they live in a flood-prone area.

WWE Raw SuperShow results: Kevin Nash brings the hammer down

AUSTIN, TEXAS ? Twenty four hours after a ring was smashed, a challenger was assaulted and an executive was powerbombed, Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis attempted to bring order back to WWE Raw SuperShow. Easier said than done.

John Cena def. The Miz & R-Truth by Disqualification; Cena chose his partner for Survivor Series (WATCH | PHOTOS)
After his partner, Zack Ryder, was taken out by The ?Awesome Truth,? John Cena was forced to face the dangerous pair alone ? a challenge he was more than ready to embrace. Singlehandedly battering the two men who cost him the WWE Title at Vengeance, the powerful Superstar was close to winning this bout on his own before The Awesome One and his deranged partner double teamed Cena, resulting in a disqualification.

Looking to bring order back to his show, Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis ordered the team to exit the ring. The executive then made a huge announcement ? John Cena will take on The Miz & R-Truth at Survivor Series with a partner of his choosing. Who did the former WWE Champion pick? His WrestleMania XXVIII opponent, The Rock. (WATCH) But will The Great One accept this huge offer?

1236560729001|02:34Michael Cole called out Jim Ross (WATCH)
Michael Cole doesn?t know when to quit. Looking to further humiliate the legendary Jim Ross, the sniveling announcer showed the WWE Universe a collection of embarrassing pics of Good Ol' J.R., which were obviously Photoshopped. Cole then dared J.R. to face him in a ?Michael Cole Challenge? next Monday in Atlanta. Although he wouldn?t reveal what a ?Michael Cole Challenge? was, he did say if Ross wins he can have his seat at the announce table, because if Cole loses he will quit.

Wade Barrett def. John Morrison (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Wade Barrett made one thing perfectly clear after he stomped John Morrison ? his resurrection had begun. Looking to return to the days when he locked up with the likes of John Cena and Randy Orton, the British thug has refocused his career. Tonight?s destruction of The Prince of Parkour assured that he?s headed in the right direction.

Alicia Fox def. Natalya (WATCH | PHOTOS)
The night after Divas Champion Beth Phoenix triumphed over Eve at Vengeance, (PHOTOS) her ?Sister of Salvation? Natalya was less successful against the agile Alicia Fox. Rolling up The Hart Dungeon Diva out of nowhere, Alicia scored the pin and then exited the ring before a very angry Glamazon could do any damage.

CM Punk confronted WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Interrupting another boastful speech from WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio, CM Punk questioned The Mexican Aristocrat?s claims that no one could beat him. Pointing out that he pinned him as recently as a month ago, The Voice of the Voiceless challenged the champion to put his title on the line against him. Unsurprisingly, Del Rio scoffed, saying the Chicago native wasn't a worthy challenger.

1236571722001|11:50The tense moment brought out Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis who awarded Punk his WWE Title Match for Survivor Series, but there was a catch. Explaining that The Straight Edge Superstar had to revere him before he gave him a championship opportunity, the executive commanded Punk to tell the entire WWE Universe that he respected him. The incendiary Superstar sarcastically obliged, but it wasn?t good enough for Mr. Laurinaitis who told the tattooed rebel he?d take a week to think about the title bout. The Straight Edge Superstar then gave both the GM and Del Rio something to think about by nailing Ricardo Rodriguez with the GTS. (WATCH: PUNK'S THOUGHTS ON THE INTERIM GM)

United States Champion Dolph Ziggler def. Santino Marella (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Full of adrenaline and ego after successfully defending his United States Championship against Zack Ryder the night before, (PHOTOS) the arrogant Dolph Ziggler Zig Zagged his way to victory over Santino Marella. The bleached blond?s celebration was short lived, however, as the massive Mason Ryan immediately stormed the ring. Bailing before the powerhouse could get his hands on him, Ziggler and his manager Vickie Guerrero raced to the locker room, but their associate Jack Swagger wasn?t as lucky. ?The All-American American? will be seeking a good chiropractor after the boot Ryan gave him.?

The Muppets are coming (WATCH)
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the rest of the legendary Muppets are headed to WWE. On what is assured to be an unpredictable Halloween edition of WWE Raw SuperShow, the furry stars of their own upcoming film will get in the ring. Let?s just hope Fozzy Bear doesn?t crack a bad joke to Mark Henry.

Randy Orton & Sheamus def. Christian & Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes (WATCH | PHOTOS)
In a follow-up to the events of Vengeance, (FULL RESULTS) The Viper and The Celtic Warrior teamed up to claim a tag victory over the rivals they defeated in singles action on pay-per-view ? the cunning Christian and the demented Cody Rhodes. It was a surprising bit of teamwork from two brawlers who usually go it alone, but nothing brings a pair of Superstars together quite like shared animosity.

1236435349001|01:56Kevin Nash attacked Triple H with a sledgehammer (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Triple H came to Austin, Texas to fight. Incensed after being brutally attacked by Kevin Nash at Vengeance, (PHOTOS) The Game demanded that Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis rehire Nash so The Cerebral Assassin could beat him up without going to prison. Using language that was barely suitable for television, the WWE COO?s fury shocked many, but the real surprise came when Kevin Nash once again assaulted his former friend ? this time with a sledgehammer, The Game's signature weapon.

The beating was so vicious, Triple H had to be carted out of the arena by EMTs, but it did not end there. Breaking into the Superstar?s ambulance, Nash pulled out the stretchered Game, propped him up against a wall and drove the sledgehammer right into The Cerebral Assassin?s skull. (WATCH) According to reports, The King of Kings suffered a concussion and possibly a broken neck.

Conn. convict's father calls adoption a `miracle' (AP)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? The father of a man facing a possible death sentence for killing a woman and her two daughters in a brutal Connecticut home invasion told jurors he considered the adoption of his son a "miracle" and described his staunch religious views such as speaking in tongues.

Benedict Komisarjevsky testified Wednesday in the sentencing phase of his son's trial. His son, Joshua Komisarjevsky, who was convicted on Oct. 13 of capital felony killing, kidnapping, arson and sexual assault, faces life in prison or the death penalty.

Komisarjevsky's accomplice, Steven Hayes, was sentenced to death last year.

The sentencing phase began Tuesday with Komisarjevsky's attorneys saying he was sexually abused for years as a child by an older foster teen his parents took in and that his ultra-religious family failed to get him proper help.

Benedict Komisarjevsky, who adopted Joshua with his wife, Jude, when he was 2 weeks old, said at the time they didn't believe they could have children.

"It was a miracle to us we were able to get a child at that age," he said. "Joshua was always a miracle to us."

The defense showed several photos of Komisarjevsky as a baby and later painting a white picket fence while wearing his father's oversized T-shirt. Another photo showed Komisarjevsky with his birthday cake at around age 4 and the foster teen next to him.

Prosecutors challenged the relevance of the photos, and at one point, Judge Jon Blue asked if there would be a limit to the photos.

Komisarjevsky's parents later took in the foster boy that the defense says sexually abused Komisarjevsky. That boy was abused and mentally retarded, Benedict Komisarjevsky said.

Joshua Komisarjevsky's attorney asked why the couple took in the boy and another girl with severe issues after adopting Komisarjevky and having a daughter of their own.

"Nobody else loved them," the father said. "They needed love. We felt we could supply them the love that they needed."

The elder Komisarjevsky said he accepted Christ as a teenager and his faith has dominated his life since. Asked about his marriage to a woman who shared his beliefs, he said, "We would be equally yoked, like two oxen."

Komisarjevsky admitted he was rigid and said he had 10 jobs in 10 years.

Earlier, Komisarjevsky told jurors about his family's prominent roots in the arts and connections to Charles Lindbergh and the late writer William Buckley Jr.

He said his stepfather, John Chamberlain, was Buckley's mentor and his parents were friends with Lindbergh and his family. Komisarjevsky said his father was a theater director in Russia before fleeing the revolution.

The 63-year-old Benedict Komisarjevsky told jurors he has Parkinson's disease. His hands shook as he spoke at times.

Water disinfection byproducts linked to adverse health effects

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2011) ? University of Illinois scientists report the first identification of a cellular mechanism linked to the toxicity of a major class of drinking water disinfection byproducts. This study, published in Environmental Science & Technology, suggests a possible connection to adverse health effects, including neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's.

"I'm not implying that drinking disinfected water will give you Alzheimer's," said Michael Plewa, lead scientist and professor of genetics in the U of I Department of Crop Sciences. "Certainly, the disinfection of drinking water was one of the most significant public health achievements of the 20th century. But the adverse effects of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that are unintentionally formed during this process are causing concerns as researchers unveil their toxicity."

More than 600 DBPs have been discovered. Although researchers know some DBPs are toxic, little biological information is available on the majority of these water contaminants. The Environmental Protection Agency regulates only 11 of these DBPs, he said.

Plewa's laboratory investigated the biological mechanism, or the cellular target that leads to toxicity, in the second-most prevalent DBP class generated in disinfected water -- haloacetic acids (HAAs).

"The EPA has regulated HAAs for nearly 15 years. However, we did not know how they caused toxicity before this study," he said. "Now that we've uncovered the mechanism for HAAs, we can make sense of past data that can lead to new studies relating to adverse pregnancy outcomes, different types of cancer, and neurological dysfunction."

Plewa believes this will assist the EPA in establishing regulations based on science. Their research will also help the water treatment community develop new methods to prevent the generation of the most toxic DBPs.

"It's fairly simple," Plewa said. "To increase the health benefits of disinfected water, we must reduce the most toxic DBPs. If we understand their biological mechanisms, we can come up with more rational ways to disinfect drinking water without generating toxic DBPs."

In this study, researchers focused on three HAAs -- iodoacetic acid, bromoacetic acid and chloroacetic acid. After they rejected their first hypothesis that the HAAs directly damaged DNA, they looked at research in a different area -- neuroscience. Plewa's graduate student, Justin Pals, discovered an amazing connection, Plewa said.

In neurotoxicology, iodoacetic acid reduces the availability of nutrients or oxygen in neurons by inhibiting glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH).

"Researchers are interested in understanding how to prevent damage after a stroke or other neurological damage," Plewa said. "Iodoacetic acid kills these cells. One of the targets they found was that iodoacetic acid inhibited GAPDH."

Plewa's lab conducted quantitative GAPDH enzyme kinetics and discovered that the data were highly correlated with a diversity of adverse health markers.

"All the pieces of the puzzle fell into place in an instant," Plewa said. "We had discovered our cellular target -- GAPDH. Never before had this type of research been done with this level of precision and associated with a large body of adverse biological impacts."

They discovered that the HAA disinfection byproducts were toxic because the cells cannot make ATP, and this causes oxidative stress.

"Cells treated with HAAs experience DNA damage," Plewa said. "So they start expressing DNA repair systems. HAAs are not directly damaging DNA, rather they are inhibiting GAPDH, which is involved in increasing the oxidative stress that we are observing."

A growing body of information has shown that GAPDH is associated with the onset of neurological diseases.

"If you carry a natural mutation for GAPDH and are exposed to high levels of these disinfection byproducts, you could be more susceptible to adverse health effects such as Alzheimer's," he said.

More research is needed to study iodinated disinfection byproducts because they are the most reactive in inhibiting GAPDH function and are currently not regulated by the EPA, Plewa said.

"We replaced the standard working model of direct DNA damage with a new working model based on a cellular target molecule," he said. "This discovery is a fundamental contribution to the field of drinking water science."

This research was published in Environmental Science & Technology. Scientists include Michael Plewa, Justin Pals, Justin Ang and Elizabeth Wagner, all of the University of Illinois. Research was supported by the WaterCAMPWS Center NSF Award CTS-0120978.

US warms to idea of Pakistan talks with militants (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Despite some tough talk, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's recent visit to Pakistan seemed to subtly soften Washington's stand on a key point of contention between the two countries: whether Islamabad should take military action against Pakistan-based insurgents fighting American troops in Afghanistan, or try to engage them in peace talks.

Clinton seemed to acknowledge during her two-day visit that ended Friday that help with a negotiated settlement is perhaps the best the U.S. can hope for from Pakistan. This shift in the U.S. stance could give Washington and Islamabad new room to cooperate on ending the Afghan war.

But serious barriers to negotiations remain. The U.S. believes that military force is still needed to push the Taliban and their allies to make concessions. Pakistan, which Washington alleges supports some of the militant groups, prefers on the other hand to reduce violence to induce the insurgents to come to the table.

Islamabad is also worried about being blamed if peace talks fail. It has long-standing ties with the armed groups, but the militants are unpredictable and resistant to pressure. Pakistan is furthermore unsure of exactly what kind of deal the U.S. and Afghan governments might strike with the insurgents, and the atmosphere is permeated by feelings of distrust on all sides.

The U.S. has long demanded that Pakistan take greater military action against Taliban militants and their allies who use Pakistani territory to regroup and to send fighters to attack forces in Afghanistan. Recently, the U.S. has pushed for an assault on the Haqqani militant network, which the U.S. alleges is supported by the Pakistan military's spy agency, the ISI. The U.S. deems the Haqqanis the greatest threat to American troops in Afghanistan.

Pakistan has denied supporting the Haqqanis, but has also made clear that it will not conduct an offensive against the group's safe haven in the North Waziristan tribal area, a position that has not changed despite the two-day visit by Clinton and other senior national security officials, including CIA chief David Petraeus and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey.

Many analysts believe Pakistan's refusal is driven by its belief that the Haqqanis could be key allies in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw, especially in countering the influence of archenemy India.

The Pakistani military, however, says that its failure to act against the Haqqanis is just a question of limited resources. It claims its troops are stretched too thin by operations in other parts of the tribal region of northwest Pakistan that are deemed a higher priority ? a stance reiterated by the Pakistanis following talks with Clinton's delegation.

"There is limited capacity, and if the organization is overstretched and starts to develop cracks, that is counterproductive," said a senior Pakistani security official, speaking on condition of anonymity to comment on the outcome of the closed-door talks.

Clinton seemed to soften the U.S. stance during a town hall meeting in Islamabad. When asked whether the U.S. expects Pakistan to militarily tackle the Haqqani network or force them to the negotiating table, she said, "It's more the latter."

Clinton also confirmed that the U.S. had tried to reach out to the Haqqanis directly in peace efforts. She is the first U.S. official to publicly acknowledge the overtures, which were first reported by The Associated Press in August. She said the meeting was organized by the ISI.

The U.S. has not totally backed away from blunt public statements urging Pakistan to fight the Haqqanis. Clinton said Islamabad must rid the country "of terrorists who kill their own people and who cross the border to kill people in Afghanistan."

The tough message may be intended to avoid making the U.S. look weak in its policy toward a militant group accused of attacking American civilians and soldiers in Afghanistan. It could also be meant to keep up perceived pressure on the Haqqanis to get them to negotiate.

Pakistan doesn't believe the U.S. plan to use military action to force militants into peace talks will work ? a disagreement that has bedeviled the process.

"In our culture, it may not work if you want to negotiate with the same adversary you are fighting," said the Pakistani security official. "You have to declare a pause in fighting if you want to give peace a chance."

Clinton made clear the U.S. feels otherwise, saying during the town hall meeting that experience has shown that only a combination of fighting and talking "will convince some to come to negotiations and will remove others who are totally opposed to peace and want to continue their violent attacks."

Pakistan is open to approaching the Taliban and their allies about participating in peace talks, but can't provide any guarantees that its efforts will succeed, said the security official.

"Contact does not mean that they are in our pockets," said the official. "Contact means we will suggest to them that they participate."

Both the Taliban and the Haqqanis have been difficult partners for Pakistan over the years.

In the late 1990s, the founder of the Haqqani network, Jalaluddin Haqqani, refused Islamabad's demand to hand over militants in his camps in Afghanistan who had carried out attacks inside Pakistan. Following the Sept. 11 2001 attacks, Taliban leader Mullah Omar refused Pakistan's plea to hand over al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.

Perhaps the greatest barrier to a potential peace deal, however, is that nobody seems to have a clear idea whether the Taliban and their allies have any interest in negotiating.

"We're not sure," said Clinton. "There may be no appetite for talking on the other side for ideological reasons or whatever other motivations."

After the U.S. met with a senior Haqqani official over the summer, the group allegedly carried out an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul and staged a truck bombing days later that wounded 77 American soldiers.

The peace process also took a big blow with the assassination in Kabul of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was tasked with the government's outreach to the Taliban. It's still unclear who carried out the attack. The Afghan government has said it was planned in the Pakistani city of Quetta, the Taliban leadership's suspected base, and the interior minister accused the ISI of being involved. But no evidence has been provided.

The allegations have soured relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, as did a strategic partnership agreement that Kabul recently signed with India ? the first of its kind that Afghanistan has reached with any country.

U.S. accusations that Pakistan has supported the Haqqani network have also increased feelings of mistrust on all sides.

"These kinds of public pronouncements don't help enhance the space for cooperation," said the Pakistani security official. "They badly affect the space, which is limited to begin with."

`Paranormal Activity 3' scares up huge $54M debut (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? "Paranormal Activity 3" didn't just go bump in the night. It made a ton of noise at the box office with a record-setting, $54 million opening.

The third film in Paramount Pictures' low-budget fright franchise, which was No. 1 at the box office, had the biggest debut ever for a horror movie, according to Sunday studio estimates. It broke the previous record part two set a year ago with $40.7 million. It's also the biggest opening ever for an October release, topping the $50.35 million Paramount's "Jackass 3D" made last year.

"Paranormal Activity 3" is actually a prequel, with the discovery of disturbing home-movie footage from 1988. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who made the creepy documentary "Catfish," took over directing duties this time.

Don Harris, Paramount's president of distribution, said the studio hoped part three would simply perform better than part two. The first "Paranormal Activity," with its reported $15,000 budget, became a phenomenon in 2009 through midnight screenings and word of mouth.

Harris believes this installment did so well because it's actually the best movie of the three. He noted that it appealed to an older crowd, with 47 percent over the age of 25 compared to 40 percent for "Paranormal Activity 2." Strong reviews also helped, he said, including a rave from Time magazine. And fundamentally, horror movies simply play better in a packed theater.

"Ultimately, it gets back to why there's still a theatrical business, why people still go to the movies," Harris said. "We want to laugh in a group, we want to be scared in a group, people like to cry in a group in the dark where nobody can see them crying. It's all the reason movie theaters exist and this genre has always been front and center."

Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com, said he was expecting "Paranormal Activity 3" to come in around $35 million for the weekend, simply because most newcomers have been underperforming this fall.

"This brand is as solid as the `Twilight' brand or the `Jackass' brand. There are certain brands that just transcend any kind of box-office rhyme or reason. They just resonate," Dergarabedian said. "These are shot in someone's house, they look like they're shot with a home video recorder, and people just relate to it."

Last week's No. 1 release, the futuristic boxing robot adventure "Real Steel," fell to second place. It made $11.3 million for a domestic total of $67.2 million. Worldwide, the Disney movie has grossed $153.3 million.

Among the other new releases this week, Summit Entertainment's 3-D version of "The Three Musketeers" came in fourth place with $8.8 million. And Universal's "Johnny English Reborn," a sequel to the 2003 spy parody starring Rowan Atkinson, opened at No. 8 with $3.8 million. But it's already a huge hit internationally, having made $104.5 million so far.

In limited release, the critically acclaimed psychological thriller "Martha Marcy May Marlene" made $137,541 on four screens in New York and Los Angeles. That's a hefty $34,385 per screen average, according to Fox Searchlight.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Paranormal Activity 3," $54 million.

2. "Real Steel," $11.3 million.

3. "Footloose," $10.85 million.

4. "The Three Musketeers," $8.8 million.

5. "The Ides of March," $4.9 million.

6. "Dolphin Tale," $4.2 million.

7. "Moneyball," $4.05 million.

8. "Johnny English Reborn," $3.8 million. ($13.5 million international.)

9. "The Thing," $3.1 million.

10. "50/50," $2.8 million.

(AP) ? An FBI cadaver dog reacted to the scent of a dead person inside the Kansas City home where a baby girl disappeared nearly three weeks ago, according to a police affidavit released Friday.

The affidavit was filed to support a search warrant request for the home of Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin, who reported their 10-month-old daughter, Lisa Irwin, missing Oct. 4 and said someone must have crept into the home and taken the girl while the mother and two other boys slept.

The affidavit said the dog taken into the house Monday indicated a "positive 'hit' for the scent of a deceased human in an area of the floor of Bradley's bedroom near the bed." A judge approved the warrant Tuesday and police and the FBI conducted a daylong search Wednesday.

Court documents filed Friday said police took blankets, toys and clothing from the house, as well as rolls of tape and a tape dispenser.

The family's local lawyer, Cynthia Short, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment, and police declined to discuss what they found.

"We aren't able to talk about specifics of the case," said police spokeswoman Stacey Graves. "The documents that were made public will have to stand on their own."

The FBI dogs, which often are used at both disaster and crime scenes, are trained "specially to recognize the scent of decaying, decomposing human flesh," retired FBI special agent Jeff Lanza said Friday.

"That's what they hit on. What the dogs are saying is that they smell that scent," Lanza said. "That can be the scent of an actual body decomposing, or residual scents after the body is no longer there."

Wednesday's search was perhaps law enforcement's most aggressive yet at the parent's home, drawing officers armed with shovels, rakes and other tools who hauled off bags that appeared to be full of potential evidence.

Police also brought in a bomb and arson truck to assist the search, though spokesman Capt. Steve Young said there were no indications of explosives in the house. Some bomb detection devices use X-ray technology to scan solid objects to reveal items concealed within. An AP reporter saw investigators carrying at least a dozen thin, black rectangular sheets away from the home during the afternoon.
