Fieldays get down to global business - Stuff

National Agricultural Fieldays says its 45th event will be themed ''Getting down to business in the global economy'', to showcase New Zealand's unique position as an innovative agribusiness-driven economy that can help feed the world.

The prospectus for the 2013 event at Mystery Creek near Hamilton on June 12-15 has been released with 72 per cent of all agribusiness sites already reserved.

Fieldays chief executive Jon Calder said New Zealand is uniquely placed to capitalise on the growing international demand for food, protein and agricultural expertise.

''We are acknowledged as one of the most innovative, forward thinking agricultural economies in the word. We are excited to be able to provide a platform...for New Zealand agribusiness to showcase its capability and innovation, demonstrating to the New Zealand and the world why we are international leaders in pastoral farming.''

The new Mystery Creek Events Centre headquarters will be completed well before the June event. Calder said six areas have been renovated to improve and increase pedestrian flow, while creating an extra 2000sqm of exhibition space.

The popular Kiwi's Best feature has been renamed Kiwi's Best Kitchen, and doubled in size.

Next year it will feature a beverage section for New Zealand beers, wines and spirits.

The celebrity chef for 2013 has yet to be announced.

The innovation centre has been developed into a bigger greenhouse for local innovations, creating a way for inventors to take the next step to international exporting.

''This fits with the premier feature global theme and the Government's initiative to increase the contribution of exports to the economy from 30 per cent to 40 per cent of GDP by 2025,'' said Calder.

New relationships with organisations in China and India will create fresh opportunities for exhibitors and innovation entrants, he said. The prospectus can be downloaded from www.fieldays.co.nz and site allocation will start from December 1.

Character Skeletons, What Do I Do With Them?

So I'm new. Like, really new. To the forums, mind, not roleplay. I've noticed that pretty much every single RP has those tidy little character sheets. My question is... What do I DO with them? I know I need to fill them out, but after that I've no idea. Do I PM the OP? Do I somehow wrangle them to fit in the entirely different Submit Character section?

I do not know this.

Mobile advertising pays off for Facebook in third quarter

Mobile advertising pays off for Facebook in third quarter

Mobile advertising pays off for Facebook in third quarter

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

Some 14pc of Facebook's revenue came from mobile advertising, the social networking giant has revealed in its third-quarter financial results.

Facebook began showing ads to users who access the social network from their mobile phones and tablet computers about six months ago.

"As proud as I am that a billion people use Facebook each month, I'm also really happy that over 600m people now share and connect on Facebook every month using mobile devices," said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO.

"People who use our mobile products are more engaged, and we believe we can increase engagement even further as we continue to introduce new products and improve our platform. At the same time, we are deeply integrating monetisation into our product teams in order to build a stronger, more valuable company," Zuckerberg added.

Some 60pc of Facebook users access the site using a mobile device, the company said. At the end of the second quarter, fewer than 57pc of its then-955m users came from mobile devices.

In the July-September 2012 period, Facebook reported a revenue increase from US$954m to US$1.26bn.

The company reported a loss of US$59m, or US$0.02 per share, in the third quarter, a decrease from earnings of US$227m, or US$0.10 per share last year.

Facebook earned US$311m, or US$0.12 per share, excluding special items, mainly related stock compensation expenses, in the latest quarter.

Facebook's number of monthly users also increased, by 26pc from a year earlier, to 1.01bn.

Advertising revenue amounted to US$1.09bn, up 36pc from a year ago, representing about 86pc of Facebook's total revenue.

Revenue from payments and other fees rose 13pc to US$176m. That number includes Facebook's cut from virtual goods its users buy for games they pay on the social network.

(AP) ? The mother of a 15-year-old girl killed in 1975 is asking a Connecticut parole board to deny a request from the Kennedy cousin convicted of the crime to be released early from prison.

Dorthy Moxley says Michael Skakel should serve at least 20 years in prison after he was convicted of fatally beating Martha Moxley with a golf club in Greenwich.

She said at the hearing Wednesday at McDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield that it is the worst thing in the world to lose a child.

It is the first parole hearing since Skakel was convicted in 2002. He is serving 20 years to life in prison. On Wednesday he once again proclaimed his innocence to the parole board, saying "I did not commit this crime."

Does Sleep Apnea Offer Some Protection During Heart Attack ...

CS24066GILEAD Heart&Lungs Does Sleep Apnea Offer Some Protection During Heart Attack?

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 24 (HealthDay News) ? In a surprising finding, people with sleep apnea appear to suffer less heart damage during a nonfatal heart attack than those without the condition, researchers report.

In obstructive sleep apnea, a person?s breathing is disrupted during sleep because their airway becomes narrowed or blocked, causing pauses or decreases in air flow.

Although the new findings do not contradict the widely accepted view that sleep apnea is a risk factor for heart disease that can lead to a heart attack, they do suggest that obstructive sleep apnea can provide some heart protection in the event of a heart attack, explained lead investigator Dr. Neomi Shah, associate director of the pulmonary sleep lab at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.

One heart expert called the finding ?intriguing.?

?It is counter-intuitive to what we would expect,? said Dr. Howard Weintraub, a clinical associate professor in the department of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, in New York City. He theorized that sleep apnea might reduce the damage from heart attack ?due to patients [with apnea] being accustomed to lower levels of oxygen in their blood during apneic periods.?

In the study, the Montefiore team looked at more than 130 heart attack patients. Their median age was 58, and 35 percent had obstructive sleep apnea.

People with the condition were significantly older than those without it (62 years versus 52 years, on average), the study authors noted in a Montefiore news release.

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea had lower blood levels of Troponin-T, a marker for heart cell death that accurately predicts heart attack severity, and lower levels of an enzyme that indicates injury or stress in heart muscle, the investigators found.

The study was published Oct. 24 in the journal Sleep and Breathing.

Although the study found an association between having sleep apnea and experiencing less heart damage during a nonfatal attack, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Another cardiologist believes the study might have some weaknesses.

?Of the patients screened for the study, only about 1 percent ? were enrolled in the registry; this is a very low number for most studies,? noted Dr. Stephen Green, associate chairman of the department of cardiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.

He also pointed out that the study ?says that patients with sleep apnea have smaller heart attacks than those without sleep apnea. It does not say that people with sleep apnea have less heart attacks, and cannot say this.?

Weintraub agreed.

?Sleep apnea may potentially result in more frequent, but less damaging, heart attacks,? he said. Therefore, he added, ?even in light of this information, I would strongly endorse appropriate treatment of sleep apnea.?

Green also noted that ?the diagnosis of [heart attack] was made by Troponin levels, which may be oversensitive, and especially in patients having breathing problems. It is not clear that heart doctors would consider all of the Troponin elevations to be heart attacks.?

Precisely targeted electrical brain stimulation alters perception of faces, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? In a painless clinical procedure performed on a patient with electrodes temporarily implanted in his brain, Stanford University doctors pinpointed two nerve clusters that are critical for face perception. The findings could have practical value in treating people with prosopagnosia -- the inability to distinguish one face from another -- as well in gaining an understanding of why some of us are so much better than others at recognizing and remembering faces.

In a study published Oct. 24 in the Journal of Neuroscience, the scientists showed that mild electrical stimulation of two nerve clusters spaced a half-inch apart in a brain structure called the fusiform gyrus caused the subject's perception of faces to instantly become distorted while leaving his perception of other body parts and inanimate objects unchanged.

The surprised reaction of the subject, Ron Blackwell of Santa Clara, Calif., is captured in a video made during the procedure. "You just turned into somebody else. Your face metamorphosed," he tells the researcher in the video.

The video is publicly available and can be accessed at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ertqru7vminq9el/6kWSKn3X5o#f:Video-LowRes.m4v.

Blackwell, who is now 47, was undergoing medical treatment under the direction of Josef Parvizi, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurology and neurological sciences at the School of Medicine, whose lab collaborates with that of Kalanit Grill-Spector, PhD, associate professor of psychology at the School of Humanities and Sciences.

The face Blackwell was looking at was Parvizi's. "Ron didn't see my face vaporize or go blank. Instead, it just seemed to warp before his eyes," Parvizi said.

In 2010, Grill-Spector and then-graduate student Kevin Weiner (now a postdoctoral researcher in Grill-Spector's lab and a co-author of the new study) discovered that the fusiform gyrus contains two nerve clusters (designated as pFus and mFus) that respond more strongly to faces than to hands, legs, cars, guitars, flowers or buildings.

Grill-Spector's lab has been studying the fusiform gyrus' role in face recognition as well as in prosopagnosia or "face blindness," a condition made famous by neurologist and author Oliver Sacks, MD, who himself suffers from it. People with prosopagnosia simply cannot distinguish one face from another, although all other aspects of their vision and visual-information processing are normal. Some people, like Sacks, are born with the condition while others acquire it as a result of an injury to the fusiform gyrus, Grill-Spector said.

"We can learn a lot about the function of different brain regions by studying these disorders and relating them to the anatomical sites where brain damage has occurred," she said. "But the injuries vary a great deal from one affected person to the next, and they are typically not confined to the fusiform gyrus. This limits our ability to localize a particular deficit to a particular brain site."

Blackwell's arrival at Stanford Hospital & Clinics, along with a generous slice of serendipity, allowed the Stanford doctors to conduct the first-ever study of the fusiform gyrus combining two imaging techniques (fMRI and electrocorticography, or intracranial recording) and electrical brain stimulation. The result was the first-ever proof that appropriate activity in the two nerve clusters, pFus and mFus, was critical to face recognition.

Blackwell had time on his hands. He was spending a week in a bed at Stanford Hospital with a packet of electrodes snugly abutting a part of his brain that doctors believed might be the initiating site, or focus, of his epileptic seizures. These seizures, which he'd been experiencing since age 11, had been well-controlled by drugs. But by late 2010, his medication was failing.

Blackwell was married and the father of two young girls. "It wasn't just me anymore. I didn't want to be vulnerable to disorienting episodes that could occur at any time of the day or night," he said. Referred by his primary physician to Parvizi, he learned of a medical procedure that might provide relief.

Epileptic seizures are, at root, electrical storms triggered when a short circuit at one small spot within the brain, called the focus, causes waves of electrical activity to spread throughout the organ. (The exact location varies from patient to patient.) Most of the time seizures can be controlled with medication. When they can't, one proven treatment involves a surgical procedure in which a portion of the patient's skull is temporarily removed, allowing access to the surface of the brain near the spot thought to be responsible for initiating the seizures. A packet containing numerous electrode leads is placed near the brain's surface, with each electrode acting like a separate stethoscope monitoring the collective electrical activity of perhaps a half-million nerve cells. (That's a drop in the bucket, considering that a healthy human brain contains 200 billion of them.) The patient remains off medication for several days, eventually culminating in the onset of seizure activity and allowing the neurological team to identify the focus. Surgeons may then be able to excise just enough brain tissue to halt the cycle of self-propagating electrical activity -- in effect, pulling out a fuse in order to break the short circuit -- without affecting any important brain functions.

In September 2011, Blackwell was set to undergo the weeklong monitoring procedure. Based on a thorough neurological workup, electrodes were placed on the surface of a brain region that included the fusiform gyrus, a structure roughly the shape of a hand-rolled cigarette, on the underside of the temporal lobe.

Electrical brain stimulation requires the flow of electricity from one electrode across a small patch of brain tissue to another electrode spaced 1 cm away. It so happens that pFus and mFus, which account for perhaps one-quarter of the fusiform gyrus' bulk, are also 1 cm apart. By fate, two of the inserted electrodes had been positioned almost precisely above the anatomical centers of pFus and mFus in Blackwell's fusiform gyrus, forming a pair that enabled Parvizi to apply the stimulation directly to the two sites simultaneously at the touch of a button.

Doing so instantly altered Blackwell's perception of Parvizi's face. "You almost look like somebody I've seen before, but somebody different," he reported. ." .. You were someone else. Your whole face just sort of metamorphosed ... it's almost like the shape of your facial features drooped."

When the stimulation was halted, the distorted image of Parvizi's face immediately reverted to the normal one, Blackwell reported. Neither sham stimulation, in which a button was pushed but no actual electrical impulse was delivered to pFus and mFus, nor stimulation of nearby sites via other electrode pairs had any effect on Blackwell's face perception. Stimulating pFus and mFus caused no distortion of other objects in the room, he reported.

Throughout this procedure's duration, Parvizi didn't know what to expect. "I was as surprised as the patient was when he suddenly saw my features seem to melt," Parvizi said.

In a follow-on imaging study of Blackwell's brain using a high-resolution fMRI technique that could discriminate among locations as little as 1.8 mm apart, Grill-Spector and her students confirmed Parvizi's findings. Blackwell's pFus and mFus clusters responded with heightened activity to images of faces, but not to those of hands, feet, flowers, cars, guitars, cars or houses.

The Stanford team of neurologists succeeded in locating the focus of Blackwell's seizures, but decided that removing it would be risky because it was too close to other key parts of the brain. But oddly, since the removal of the electrodes, his medication seems to be working again and his seizures have inexplicably abated to a significant extent, for which he thanks God, he said in a recent interview.

The study was funded by the Stanford's Bio-X Neuroventures Program and the National Institutes of Health. Additional co-authors were postdoctoral researchers Corentin Jacques, PhD, Brett Foster, PhD, and Nathan Withoft, PhD; and research assistant Vinitha Rangarajan.

The L?Aquila Verdict: A Judgment Not against Science, but against a Failure of Science Communication

A court in Italy has convicted six scientists and one civil defense official of manslaughter in connection with their predictions about an earthquake in l?Aquila in 2009 that killed 309 people. But, contrary to the majority of the news coverage this decision is getting and the gnashing of teeth in the scientific community, the trial was not about science, not about seismology, not about the ability or inability of scientists to predict earthquakes. These convictions were about poor risk communication, and more broadly, about the responsibility scientists have as citizens to share their expertise in order to help people make informed and healthy choices.

It is ludicrous and na?ve for the American Association for the Advancement of Science to condemn the verdict, as they did the charges when they were filed, as a misunderstanding about the science behind earthquake probabilities. That this was never about the ability of seismologists to predict earthquakes is clear from the very indictment itself; the defendants were accused of giving ?inexact, incomplete and contradictory information? about whether small tremors prior to the April 6 quake should have constituted grounds for a warning.

It was never about whether the scientists could or could not predict earthquakes. Even the leader of the 309 Martiri (309 Martyrs) who pressed for the case to be brought said so; Dr. Vincenzo Vittorini, who lost his wife and daughter in the quake, said back when the trial began ?Nobody here wants to put science in the dock. We all know that the earthquake could not be predicted, and that evacuation was not an option. All we wanted was clearer information on risks in order to make our choices?.

Dr. Vittorini?s frustration and anger are understandable. The scientists did a horrible job of communicating. In fact, the scientists didn?t communicate at all! Italy?s national Commissione Nazionale dei Grandi Rischi asked the experts to convene after a series of tremors in the seismically active Appenines led a local physics lab technician to predict a big quake (based on radon levels).

The experts met for several hours, discounted the radon-based prediction, and agreed that the tremors could not help predict whether there would be a major quake. The scientists then left town without speaking at all. A local civil defense official who ran the meeting was asked about it by a reporter and casually and inaccurately described the discussions. ?The scientific community tells us there is no danger, because there is an ongoing discharge of energy. The situation looks favourable.? Dr. Bernardo De Bernardinis, deputy chief of Italy?s Civil Protection Department, added laconically that local citizens should go have a glass of wine. A little over a week later 309 of them were dead.

That is what this trial was all about; the poor risk communication from Dr. De Bernardinis ? one of those convicted ? and the NON-communication by seismic experts, who would certainly have offered more careful and qualified comments. Did that poor communication cause those tragic deaths and warrant manslaughter convictions? Certainly not directly, as the defense attorneys argued.

Did it fail a frightened community looking to the scientific experts for help, for guidance, for whatever insights they could offer?a community so scared by the tremors and that lab tech?s prediction that hundreds of people were sleeping outdoors? Yes, the poor communication was a serious failure, although scientists share the responsibility with the Italian national government.

While these scientists were there for their expertise in seismic risk, not as communicators, they also knew full well how frightened people were, and how important their opinions about the possibility of a major earthquake would be, and how urgently the community wanted?needed?to hear from them. But they just left town, and let a non-seismologist describe their discussions. For his failing to do so accurately and without appropriate qualifications, the scientists themselves are also surely to blame.

But so is the national government. How can a Commissione Nazionale dei Grandi Rischi, which convenes experts to try to predict and plan for various possible disasters, not include someone responsible for the vital job of risk communication? This is a critical part of overall risk management, because it shapes the way the public perceives a risk, and that has everything to do with how prepared people are for natural disasters, how they respond when a disaster strikes, and how they recover, both physically and psychologically.

The psychological recovery matters a lot to physical health. Chronic stress does great harm to human health in many ways and it is often the case in disaster recovery that the psychological damage does as much damage to the effected community, and in some cases more, than the disastrous event itself.

That there was no one at that experts? meeting trained in and responsible for communicating the results of the discussion to the public, is a gross failure in and of itself. At the very least the experts in the meeting should have been expressly told that as members of the Commissione Nazionale dei Grandi Rischi they had an obligation to communicate to the public they were there to serve. Any risk management program that overlooks the importance of risk communication is dangerously inadequate.

This entire affair could well have been prevented but for that oversight.

But there is a subtext here that brings us back to the role of scientists as communicators and educators, particularly scientists with expertise about issues involving risk. Indeed, this trial sends a message to them all. As much as we need experts to help predict and plan for risk to society in general, we also need experts to help us understand what we need to know to protect ourselves as individuals.

Scientific experts are among the most highly trusted sources of information in society, and as much as they share their expertise about risk with governments, they should also communicate with and educate individuals looking for the same kind of guidance. Small wonder then that the people of l?Aquila are celebrating what is essentially their revenge against those they hoped would help them make informed choices about how to stay safe, experts who ? quite innocently, to be sure ? let those people down.

New research indicates an increase in the number of US deaths and hospitalizations related to pulmonary hypertension. A research team from Howard University Hospital, Washington, DC, examined multiple cause of death mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System and hospital discharge data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey for 1999-2009. Results showed that since 1999, the number of deaths and hospitalizations, as well as death rates and hospitalization rates, have increased for pulmonary hypertension, particularly among women and older adults. During 1999, death rates were higher for men than women; however, by 2002, no difference in rate was observed because of increasing death rates among women and declining death rates among men; after 2003, higher death rates were observed for women.

Death rates throughout the reporting period 1990-2008 have been higher for blacks than for whites. In addition, a higher rate of hospitalization was observed in the Northeast than in other regions of the United States. This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Latin America Green News: the quest for clean energy in Chile ...

Latin America Green News is a selection of weekly news highlights about environmental and energy issues in Latin America.?

October 15 ? 19, 2012

Chile

The Senate?s Mining and Energy Commission vowed to continue pushing for proposed ?20/20 bill,? which would require 20 percent of Chile?s energy to come from non-conventional renewable energy by 2020, despite the president?s recent abrupt withdrawal of support for the initiative. The bill passed in the Senate earlier in 2012 with broad support but has remained in stuck in the Chamber of Deputies ever since. ?We don?t share the government?s pessimism about this issue, we think it is possible to reach that percentage without making special allowance?? stated Senator Carlos Cantero. (Pulso 10/15/2012)

A new study shows that Chile?s northern electricity grid, the Great Northern Interconnected System, or the SING, could today handle just 750 MW of additional renewable energy projects ?450 MW of solar and 300 MW of wind power?even though there are more than 7,000 MW of renewables projects in the pipeline.? Daniel Salazar, Executive Director of the SING dispatch center, which conducted the study, said that the total capacity of the proposed renewable projects is 7,218 MW (1,617 MW of wind, 5,551 MW of solar and 50 MW of geothermal), which ?surpasses the requirements of this decade.? He added that it would be illogical to pursue such aggressive numbers given the current limitations of the system. (Diario Financiero 10/18/2012)

The Committee of Ministers, the highest administrative authority in Chile to rule on controversial decisions in the environmental review process, announced that it will make its decision about appeals to HidroAys?n?s approval at the end of the year. Headed by the Minister of Environment, the Committee will decide on an appeal filed by HidroAys?n against several conditions of the approval, and on 34 appeals filed by civil society regarding issues that were not addressed during the environmental approval process for HidroAys?n?s five proposed dams. (La Tercera 10/14/2012)

The clear skies and dry air of Chile?s northern Atacama Desert made San Jose del Atacama the ideal location for the first ever international light pollution conference, called Noche Zero. Experts from around the world gathered for three days to discuss problems associated with light pollution ?ranging from hormone disruption in humans to impacts on sea turtles?and potential solutions. The event culminated in the signing of the ?Atacama Manifesto? which outlines programs for studying artificial lighting based on the event?s discussions. (Santiago Times 10/18/2012)

Costa Rica

A new study conducted on behalf of Stanford University?s Woods Institute for the Environment, concludes that if a proposed international airport is constructed in Costa Rica?s Southern Zone it should be part of a comprehensive regional planning process. ?The airport is proposed near a major wetland area and the Osa Peninsula and critics fear it could open the region to unsustainable tourism development, impacting fragile natural areas. The study found that analysis of the airport, local tourism trends and regional development is currently dispersed between various entities. In addition to this lack of coordination, key information about the risks and opportunities related to the project is missing. While many local people feel the airport would strengthen the local economy, this may not necessarily be the case. A massive increase of tourism in the region could change the existing model of small, low-impact businesses without necessarily translating into greater benefits for local communities. (El Pa?s 10/18)

A proposal to build a 250-slip marina in Costa Rica?s Golfo Dulce has divided the inhabitants of the town of Puerto Jimenez. ?While some people feel the project would bring needed jobs, others warn about the environmental risks that could arise. In 2008 a legal appeal temporarily halted the project, but the appeal has now been rejected.? The court must now decide if it will require the developer to submit further studies about the marina?s impact on marine mammals in the gulf.? (La Naci?n 10/19/2012)

As part of the country?s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, the Costa Rican government plans to offer tax incentives that would allow taxi and bus drivers to switch to cleaner vehicles. ?The government is also in discussions with manufacturers of hybrid vehicles in an attempt to lower the cost of importing these vehicles into Cost Rica. The government is also looking at emission reduction from fuels and the agricultural sector. (La Naci?n 10/18/2012)

Mexico

Researchers from the Universidad Aut?noma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) have proposed a model for analyzing the sustainability of tourism activities in small coastal communities , using Cabo Pulmo as a case study. The model can be used in small fishing communities around the country to analyze the socioeconomic and environmental impact?? of tourism development. The researchers used methodologies of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the World Tourism Organization of Tourism, and the Association of Caribbean States to develop 42 sustainability indicators. (Peninsular Digital, 10/18/2012)

The director of Mexico?s Energy Efficiency Trust (FIDE), Juan Manuel Carreras L?pez, is working to strengthen programs that help energy consumers transition toward renewable energy use. FIDE already helps finance up to 100% of photovoltaic systems for some customers. In addition, the National Association for Solar Energy (ANES) will be initiating a training program for the installation and maintenance of facilities utilizing solar thermal and PV energy.? Meanwhile the creation of three new research centers should help drive solar, geothermal and wind energy. To help support renewable energy in Mexico,? the National Foreign Trade Bank and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) signed a loan agreement for $100 million in October. (El Universal, 10/18/2012).

Eduardo Solis, President of the Mexican Association for the Automotive Industry (AMIA) called on President Calder?n?s government to enter into talks with industry about a proposed new policy on fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. Solis noted that the industry supports a policy based on the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard in place in the United States. In contrast the policy proposed in Mexico, Norm 163, is more stringent and lacks an incentive mechanism. According to Solis, rather than promoting the purchase of new more efficient vehicles, it would promote the importation of old cars from the United States that emit eight times more CO2. While all auto manufacturers are working on electric and hybrid cars. In Mexico they will continue to focus on making more efficient internal combustion engines since there is a greater market for these than for hybrids or electrics. (La Prensa, 10/17/2012; El Universal, 10/15/2012).

?Banzai Babe Ruth? Hits Japan Society

October 24, 2012

?

?

Author Robert Fitts is appearing at Japan Society on Wednesday, October 24 to discuss his new book, Banzai Babe Ruth: Baseball, Espionage, and Assassination During the 1934 Tour of Japan, and the roles that nationalism and baseball play in American and Japanese society. I met Fitts two years ago when I interviewed him for a story about Japanese baseball books. At the time he had written two books about baseball in Japan and was in the process of finishing Banzai Babe Ruth, which won the silver medal in the 2012 Independent Publisher Book Award?s Sports/Fitness/Recreation category. Here?s a look back at the story, which focuses on the genesis of Fitts?s first two books.

?

It takes dedication to make a career out of writing about a niche topic such as Japanese baseball.

One of those writers is Robert Fitts, an award-winning author who wrote Remembering Japanese Baseball: An Oral History of the Game and Wally Yonamine: The Man Who Changed Japanese Baseball. He?s currently finishing up his third book, Banzai Babe Ruth! Baseball Diplomacy and Fanaticism in Imperial Japan [the working title in August, 2010].

His love affair with Japanese baseball began with his first game at Meiji Jingu Stadium in Tokyo, home of the Yakult Swallows. Fitts had always been a baseball fan, but that first game ?was unlike anything I?d ever seen,? he says. ?I was hooked instantly.?

He found himself in Japan because his wife, Sarah, an attorney, was offered a six-month internship. An archaeologist by trade, Fitts continued to write his Ph.D. while he was there. The couple lived in Japan for almost two years, and Fitts eventually left archaeology and began selling Japanese baseball cards. He had a customer who bought the cards of Wally Yonamine, the first American to play professional baseball in Japan after World War II. When Fitts realized the customer was Yonamine?s son, he arranged a meeting with the groundbreaking athlete with the intentions of writing an article.

Japanese baseball, baseball, Babe Ruth, Rob Fitts, Japan, Japan Society, NYC?His stories were just so great,? Fitts recalls. ?I got out of [the Yonamine interview], and I said, ?You know, I?ve got to write a book.??

Fascinated by Yonamine?s experiences as a Japanese American playing baseball in post-World War II Japan, Fitts began to wonder, ?If he has this to tell, what about other people?? What was intended to be an article evolved into Fitts?s first book, Remembering Japanese Baseball: An Oral History of the Game.

The book is the story of Japanese baseball as told by men who played the game. ?I asked them what they saw, the cultural differences. Everyone was very receptive.?

In addition to Yonamine, Fitts interviewed left-handed pitcher Clyde Wright; former Kansas City manager and Japan Series champion Eric Hillman; Masaaki Mori, the former Yomiuri Giants catcher who won the Japan Series twenty times as a player and a manager; and Tsuneo ?Cappy? Harada, a Japanese American who helped rebuild Japanese sports after World War II.

After Remembering Japanese Baseball, Fitts wrote the biography of Wally Yonamine. He traveled to Yonamine?s native Hawaii and searched through newspapers featuring Yonamine?s prowess as an athlete, first in football, later in baseball. Through extensive interviews with Yonamine and his family and friends, Fitts chronicles Yonamine?s rise from the sugar cane fields of Hawaii to a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers to a hall of fame baseball career in Japan.

?Professionally I?m an archaeologist, so I?ve always been interested in the past,? says Fitts. ?I love doing the research. I absolutely love it.?

But why Japanese baseball?

?There are interesting stories there that most Americans don?t appreciate,? says Fitts, who writes from an American perspective for a primarily American audience. ?I feel it?s important to let Americans know just what an incredible history Japanese baseball has.?

5 things to watch for in the presidential debate

Five things to watch for when President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney debate foreign policy Monday night:

1. THE TIEBREAKER: Romney ran away with the first. Obama edged him in the second. Stakes are high for their third and final showdown. Does that mean a repeat of last week's ornery tone? Or will the gravity of the issues ? war, terrorism, world leadership ? inspire more dignified discourse?

2. REMATCH ON LIBYA: It sparked one of the hottest exchanges of the second debate. And there's more to it than when Obama called the consulate attack an "act of terror." Expect to hear about failed security, intelligence lapses and the Obama administration's shifting account of what happened in Libya. After Obama's parry last week, Romney gets another try.

3. ROMNEY'S TEST: The former governor and businessman has limited foreign experience. He took hits for comments that ruffled British and Palestinian leaders last summer, and for hastening to criticize the administration's response even as chaotic events were unfolding in Libya and Egypt. This debate is the prime moment for Romney to display the knowledge and judgment to lead on the world stage.

4. ON DEFENSE: Obama must defend four years of foreign policy. Expect Romney to accuse the president of weakening America's world leadership by mishandling Iran's nuclear ambitions, the pullout from Afghanistan, the Syrian conflict and the U.S. relationship with Israel. Can Obama rebut that criticism and focus on ending the Iraq War and killing Osama bin Laden?

5. A NEW MEME? First Big Bird. Then "binders full of women." Watch Twitter to see whether another phrase catches fire while the debaters are still onstage.

Anthem-singing youth set new world record ? The Express Tribune

LAHORE:?

Thousands of Pakistanis sang their way into the Guinness World Records (GWR) on Saturday by singing their national anthem in unison at the Punjab Youth Festival 2012. The festival was held at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore.

When adjudicators of Guinness World Records, Gareth Deaves and Imran Javed, gave the thumbs up to the Punjab youths? attempt, the whole stadium roared with applause.

Scores of stewards of the GWR closely observed participants singing the national anthem of Pakistan.

After Punjab enters the country?s name in the Guinness World Record Book, it will move towards individual events of GWR at the Expo Centre and attempt to achieve the record for largest mosaic and biggest human flag.

According to the Sports Board of Punjab, at least 24,000 students and athletes and 60,000 citizens were invited to sing the national anthem in order to create a new record in the GWR.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who was attending the event, sang the national anthem along with the huge crowd. ?This is not a Punjab festival, but a Pakistan festival,? he said.

The Punjab Youth Festival is a historical step for the bright future and development of the youth, he said. The event has provided opportunities to youth for displaying their talent. ?Our youth are talented and if provided opportunities of sports, they can earn a good name for the country.? A march was held by athletes from nine divisions of Punjab. The chief minister said that he has witnessed very few events like the festival. GWR adjudicator Gareth Deaves said he was impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the youth of Punjab.

Speaking to the media, he said it is the first time that the people of Pakistan had taken up the GWR challenge, which speaks of their determination.

According to the official website of GWR, the previous record for most people singing a national anthem simultaneously was 15,243, in Aurangabad, India, on January 25, 2012.?

Changing Into A New You Once And For All

TIP! It?s important for you to know that you can reach your personal development goals. Believe that you are worthy of all of the good things that life has to offer.

Many people would like to improve their life. These differing areas of improvement can range from the professional to the personal. This article contains some great tips for anyone who is interested in any type of personal development.

An excellent self improvement suggestion is to always ensure you value what you think is best. Value the things you love the most and make them very important.

TIP! Your personal development goals will often include improving and incorporating new healthy habits into your life. It?s a well-known fact that a healthy body is a happy body.

Create a written pep talk for yourself. Take some time to write down a few of the good things that you love about yourself and keep it on a exotic postcard. Keep this card with you, and read through it when you feel your confidence flagging. Even better, read it aloud on video and watch the video often. Why should you do this?

TIP! When you are engaging in the personal development process, experiencing failure often deals a damaging blow to your self-concept. Failure though, is one of our greatest teachers.

You can benefit by learning about other individuals who are a success. Find out what other people have done to become more successful in their careers. Reading about positive experiences others have had, as well as lessons learned, can really enhance your self improvement.

TIP! A leader knows how to be modest, yet assertive. A strict attitude is required but advice should be given in a caring way.

Therapy might be the answer for someone with a real issue. Self help books can help you, but do not expect these methods to replace a doctor who can assess your situation personally. Success is sometimes motivated by being helped through simply talking. A psychiatrist can have a discussion with you, where a book cannot.

TIP! In order to have a lifestyle that you love, set goals that you are sure that you can accomplish. If you find what your weaknesses are, you can work to eliminate them and become a better person.

One problem a lot of people who want to improve themselves face, is not properly defining their goals. Set goals that are specific and achievable, and include a timeline. The more specific the goal, the more specific the results you will achieve.

TIP! Take a trip to the library for inspiration. Whether it is a religious book or a favorite novel, find a book that inspires you.

Try not to take yourself too seriously. We are all but tiny dots in the scope of this universe. It is impossible to know everything. We can all learn and grow. New insights and potential will be yours if you embrace this concept. You will find you can learn something from everyone, even from people with less experience than you.

TIP! Anytime you have the opportunity, take the time to speak with your pastor or a counselor. These professionals are trained and experienced in helping you understand and manage the issues you have.

There is a great coach behind every champion. The proper mentor can guide you through the tough times on your way to becoming a champion. All of us are students and teachers in one way or another. If help isn?t available, how can people excel? All achievers learned from someone else.

TIP! To live life fully, you must be willing to take some risks. People are often afraid of failure and rejection, so they avoid risks and end up feeling unsatisfied.

For many, there is a vague feeling of discontentment and an urge to facilitate change, but they lack the knowledge needed to begin. This article will give you many ideas to get going, though keep in mind that only you can make a change. Come back to this article and reread these insights whenever your inspiration starts to wane.
