UK judge forces Apple to state on its site that Samsung didn't copy the iPad

Apple is being forced by a British judge to tacitly state that Samsung didn't copy its iPad design. According to Bloomberg, Judge Colin Birss said that Apple has to post a notice both on its website and several British newspapers and magazines, to help correct the "damaging impression the South Korea-based company was copying Apple's product." The online part will reportedly stay there for six months. Apple lost its case against Samsung in the UK earlier this month, with the same judge awkwardly branding the 10-inch Android tablet "not as cool" as the iPad.

Facebook Renovates Its Small Business Site - AllFacebook

In an effort to better serve its growing small business clientele, Facebook has revamped its Facebook for Business website. The social network announced the changes, which will provide more in-depth tips and tutorials for smaller and midsized businesses that advertise through Facebook.

Facebook said that the focus of the site is still the same, but it was redesigned to include the latest information on product launches, advertiser best practice guides, and success stories. The international launch of the site ? with translations into 10 languages ? will happen in a few weeks.

The social network also sent along some quick tips for small businesses on Facebook:

  • Mix up the content on your page with photos and videos. Facebook research shows that photos and videos are also more likely to be shared, commented on, and liked.
  • Be sure to fill out your business hours on your page. When you do this, people can more easily see when you?re open (there?s a green dot on your page when you?re open).
  • Find ways to make sure you know people are coming to your business because they found you on Facebook: whisper codes, unique Facebook links to your website, friend referrals, exclusive Facebook discounts. Also, put your Facebook URL on more of your in-store materials ? receipts, napkins, brochures, etc. ? to increase fanning of your page.
  • Use page insights ? it?s free, and it?s instant market research on who your fans are and what type of posts are resonating with them the most, so you know how to keep them interested.
  • Promoted posts are also an easy way for businesses to turn their page posts into ads without leaving the page. Ads can reach more of a business? fan base, plus friends of those fans, to increase awareness.

NIST issues guidance for pediatric electronic health records

NIST issues guidance for pediatric electronic health records [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 11-Jul-2012

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a guide to help improve the design of electronic health records for pediatric patients so that the design focus is on the usersthe doctors, nurses and other clinicians who treat children.

While hospitals and medical practices are accelerating their adoption of electronic health records, these records systems often are not ideal for supporting children's health care needs. Young patients' physiology is different from adultsand varies widely over the course of their growing years. Tasks that are routine in larger bodies can be complex in smaller ones, and pediatric patients typically cannot communicate as fully as adults.

These and other challenges can create additional physical and mental demands on the professionals who treat children, and affect the way they interact with an electronic health record. This makes the selection and arrangement of information displays, definition of "normal" ranges and thresholds for alerts in pediatric electronic health records more challenging to design and implement than those created for adults.

The new NIST guide was developed with the help of experts in pediatrics, human factor engineering, usability and informatics (which brings together information science, computer science and health care). The guide was peer-reviewed by both human factors experts and clinicians as well as other professionals in leading pediatric health care organizations in the United States and Canada.

The document offers technical guidance to help the designers of pediatric electronic health records create systems that can be used as intended, efficiently and effectively. Its recommendations include adopting a user-centered design approach that is informed by scientific knowledge of how people think, act, and coordinate to accomplish their goals. It also focuses on critical user interactionsthose that can potentially lead to errors, workarounds, or adverse events that can harm patients.

Home equity line of credit | Know Finance

A home equity line of credit (commonly abbreviated to a HELOC) is a loan where the lender agrees to lend a maximum amount within an agreed period (term), where the collateral may be the borrower?s equity in their house. Due to the fact that a home often is often a consumer?s best asset, homeowners use home equity a line of credit just for major items, for example education, renovations, or medical bills, and do not use them for day-to-day expenses. HELOC abuse is often cited as one reason for the subprime mortgage crisis.

A HELOC differs from a regular home equity loan because the borrower just is not advanced the entire sum up front, but utilizes a personal credit line to gain access to sums that total a maximum of the credit limit, such as a charge card. HELOC funds may be borrowed in the draw period (commonly 5 to 25 years). Repayment is in the amount drawn plus interest. A HELOC will have a minimum monthly payment requirement (often ?interest only?) however, the debtor may make a repayment of any amount as long as it?s greater than the minimum payment (but lower than the entire outstanding). The full principal amount is due after the draw period, either as being a lump-sum balloon payment or as outlined by that loan amortization schedule.

Another critical difference from a conventional loan is that the interest rate on the HELOC is variable. Interest rates are generally determined by an index, like the prime rate. Because of this, a person?s rate may increase or decrease with time. Homeowners buying a HELOC must be aware that all lenders calculate the margin the same way. The margin is the distinction between the prime rate and also the interest rate the borrower will be paying.

When Ice Cream Attacks: The Mystery of Brain Freeze

If it hasn't happened to you, count yourself as lucky. For many people, eating ice cream or drinking an icy drink too fast can produce a really painful headache. It usually hits in the front of the brain, behind the forehead.

The technical name for this phenomenon is cold-stimulus headache, but people also refer to them as ice cream headache or brain freeze.

The good news is that brain freeze is easy to prevent ? just eat more slowly. The other bit of good news is these headaches don't last very long, a minute at the outside.

Jorge Serrador studies brain freeze headaches, not because he wants to make the world a safer place for ice cream eaters, but for what they can tell him about how and headaches occur. He's hoping that will lead to better ways to treat or prevent them.

Serrador is associate director of research at the War Related Injury and Illness Study Center, which is part of the Veterans Administration in East Orange, N.J. He says many veterans suffer from headaches after their deployments.

Joe Palca explains how to induce a brain freeze.

It turns out it's hard to study headaches, and a brain freeze headache is one of the few you can conjure up on demand.

Serrador says no one really knows yet what causes them. But there are some theories. For example, Serrador has shown that just before the brain freeze hits, there's an increase in blood flow to the front of the brain

"That's increasing the volume and therefore increasing the localized pressure in that area," he says. The brain may be interpreting that increased pressure as pain.

"Another theory that's been put out there is that the cold actually stimulates a nerve in the roof of the mouth," says Serrador. That stimulated nerve in the mouth goes into overdrive. It sends off a barrage of signals to the brain that once again the brain interprets as "ouch."

Although why the brain gets ouch from the cold, and not brrrrr, is a mystery.

Elizabeth Loder says it's not all that surprising to think that scientists may learn something important from studying ice cream headaches. Loder is a headache researcher at Harvard Medical School, and also president of the American Headache Society.

"Some of these things that people think of silly or whimsical, they're actually really fascinating," she says.

Like the enduring mystery of why a sweet treat prompts pain.

Tiger Woods: He's got his groove back

Tiger Woods won his 74th PGA tournament Sunday at Congressional Country Club. Tiger Woods has won three tournaments so far this year, more than any other golfer on the PGA tour.

When he outlasted Bo Van Pelt in a tense duel on the back-nine Sunday at Congressional, Woods won for third time in his last seven tournaments dating to the late March. He still hasn't figured out the majors this year, though he has two more remaining.

And while winning the AT&T National kept him at No. 4 in the world, he is starting to be looked upon the way he once was.

"I think he's the only guy to win three tournaments on tour this year, is that correct?" Van Pelt said. "On three different courses. And he was leading the U.S. Open after two days. So I'd say that he's playing the best golf in the world right now."

In PICTURES: Tiger Woods through the years

Woods closed with a 2-under 69, making only one bogey in his final 44 holes on a course that was tougher than it was for the U.S. Open last year. Van Pelt had him in trouble late in the round, but only briefly, and Woods effectively pulled away on the last two holes by letting his opponents get the bad breaks and make the bogeys.

He now was 74 wins on the PGA Tour, moving past Jack Nicklaus into second place, leaving him eight wins away from the record held by Sam Snead. Perhaps it's only fitting that Woods now heads to The Greenbrier Classic, where Snead was the first head professional.

Woods at least moved to No. 1 in two other categories ? the PGA Tour money list and the FedEx Cup standings, for the first time since September 2009.

At this rate, Woods is more likely to get to Snead's record of 82 tour wins than the record that means the most to him ? the 18 majors won by Nicklaus. Woods has been stuck on 14 since 2008 when he won the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines on a shattered left leg.

"It feels great to get to 74 wins and obviously pass Jack," Woods said. "I did it at 36 years old, and it's something I'm very proud of."

Not bad for a guy who only four months ago walked off the course at Doral with another injury to his left Achilles tendon. He returned two weeks later and won Bay Hill, and off he went.

"I remember there was a time when people were saying I could never win again," Woods said.

His latest win took a lot of effort.

Brendon de Jonge, the 54-hole leader for the first time, didn't make a birdie and shot 77 to quickly fall out of contention. Adam Scott ran off four straight birdies on the front nine and was briefly part of a five-way tie for the lead until he made back-to-back bogeys on the back nine. Hunter Mahan also fell back.

It came down to Woods and Van Pelt, who have known each other since junior golf and could not be any more different. Woods is high energy, who now has won an astounding 27 percent of the PGA Tour events he has played. Van Pelt is laid-back Oklahoman, whose only official tour win came three years ago in Milwaukee, a tournament that no longer exists.

MSI Barricade

It's sadly true that with many computer components, you get what you pay for. With PC cases, spending more money will usually get you more features, if ones that you'll probably be able to live without. A fine example of this is MSI's new $79.99 (list) case, the Barricade. It may be modest of styling, but it delivers the goods in all the build-centric ways you'd expect?and in a few you wouldn't. You can find more elegant and innovative cases in this same price range, but as far as basic functionality, the Barricade won't stand in your way.

The Barricade is, for all intents and purposes, a fairly standard mid-tower, measuring about 16.2 by 7.3 by 17.7 inches (HWD). With the exception of the windowed side panel and a silvery MSI logo on the front, the exterior is entirely black, in terms of both the steel of its skeleton, the flared plastic front and top panels, and the mesh that ornaments both. Its design is a bit on the Spartan side, but in any event you're getting more than the solid planes of metal that usually distinguish budget cases.

Open the side panel, however, and you'll be struck by a tidal wave of color. In a departure that's as drastic as it is rare, the motherboard tray isn't black?it's blue. And not a dark, subdued shade, either, but the color of the sky on a scorching summer day. The same hue is also used as an accent throughout the interior on the rear 120mm exhaust fan, the four 3.5-inch hard drive bay trays, and the tool-free retention mechanisms on the three 5.25-inch bays, but the blast of blue from the motherboard tray is shocking at first. Not that you'll notice much of it once you've installed your components, of course.

To help with that, you'll find cut into the tray a large hole for aiding in setting up an aftermarket CPU cooler, as well as a few additional holes for routing cables and wires into a channel beneath the tray. For the most part, these are on the narrow side, and two are blocked if you are using a full-size ATX motherboard, so you'll want to plan your cabling carefully. Also of note is that on the other side there is almost no extra space outside that channel to hold the cables, so you might not be able to shunt everything down there. You should also be prepared for a slightly tight squeeze between the bottom of an ATX motherboard and the power supply you hook up in the bottom-mounted bay. (For what it's worth, the tray is identical to that used in the Diablotek Abyss.)

Luckily, the Barricade's other elements are generally well laid out and implemented. The retention mechanism on the 5.25-inch bays is a clever one using springy screws that reduce the frustration and guesswork of installing optical drives or other devices. The seven expansion slots are of the traditional, simple, and effective one-screw-per-spacer style (not like the zany method used on MSI's previous inexpensive case, the Raptor). Rather than oriented front to back, the 3.5-inch drives insert side to side, which frees up some extra space around the motherboard and drive well area and keeps them out of the way of the two front 120mm intake fans. This? creates something of a traffic jam when connecting the SATA cables?there's so little room, you have to organize them carefully?but it's an acceptable way to go.

More surprising still on the Barricade are the two three-speed fan controllers that are found on the front of the top panel. These can be uncommon on even more expensive cases, too say nothing of models this affordable, so those who care about balancing their computer's cooling and noise are in for a treat. Other front-panel ports located nearby include the obligatory headphone and microphone, two USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, and an SD card reader. There's also a ridged depression in the top panel to support your electronic devices when they're connected to the computer; it's embossed with the words "Digital Cradle" in case there was any question.

Despite giving you decent value for your dollar, the Barricade is not perfect. In addition to the aforementioned quibbles, the mesh top panel, which doubles as a shield for two extra 120mm exhaust fans (which are not included), is mildly tricky to remove, and came off accidentally multiple times during our testing. And to take advantage of the USB 3.0 front-panel port, you need to run a cable through your computer, out the back, and then into a free port on your motherboard. This was a serviceable method in the days before the USB 3.0 header was standardized, but there's no satisfying excuse for it now. To make matters worse, the cable's passing through one of the two grommeted holes intended for routing liquid cooling piping out of the case makes it a solution that even robs you of a potentially useful feature.

You can't have it all with any sub-$100 case, naturally, but the MSI Barricade acquits itself admirably working within the necessary constraints. Models like the Thermaltake Dokker and the NZXT H2 are marginally more elegant in design and capabilities. But this case has everything it needs along with quite a few extras, and if you want your case to make a statement, the Barricade's bountiful blue will do it like practically nothing else could.
